In the domed city of Evanescence, appearance is everything. A Natural Born amongst genetically-altered Aristocrats, all Ella ever wanted was to be like everyone else. Augmented, sparkling, and perfect. Then…the crash. Devastated by her father’s death and struggling with her new physical limitations, Ella is terrified to learn she is not just alone, but little more than a prisoner.

Her only escape is to lose herself in Nexis, the hugely popular virtual reality game her father created. In Nexis she meets Guster, a senior player who guides Ella through the strange and compelling new world she now inhabits. He offers Ella guidance, friendship…and something more. Something that allows her to forget about the “real” world, and makes her feel whole again.

But Nexis isn’t quite the game everyone thinks it is.

And it’s been waiting for Ella.

I was intrigued about Nexis as soon as I read the blurb.

In this new post-apocalyptic dystopian world, humans have decided to alter and modify their bodies. The Elite live in a domed city called Evanescence where AI is the norm.

One girl, Ellani Drexel is becoming part of the Aristocracy, thanks to her father's accomplishments. Ella's still a Natural, meaning she has not undergone any type of surgery or changes to her body. She has been able to attend school because of her intelligence and not because of her status. She wants to be a designer despite knowing a lot about programming.

After a terrible accident, she immerses herself into a virtual reality game her father created called Nexis. Here, is where she meets Guster, a young man who is following a quest. The more time she spends with him, the more she likes him and trusts him. But, not everything is what it seems and when her two worlds start colliding, she must decide what's the right thing to do.

After finishing Nexis, I realized that there are a lot of questions which still remain unanswered. I felt awful about what happened to Ella after the accident, but I was happy she had someone at home who still cared for her despite being a robot.
The whole idea of an Elite class and the Disfavored was unnerving. I want to learn more about what's happening outside the dome. What is really going on with the disfavored?
I was horrified about the idea of the Dolls. What a terrible life to live! My first thought was: how do you reverse the damage? Is it even possible?
I hope to get more answers in the next installment.

Cliffhanger: Yes

I was sucked into this book right away due to the extremely unique world this book was set it. I have not read any book that has a world quite like the world in this book. I thought the author did a great job at world building so the readers could understand how the society worked. The world building was nicely woven into the story without it seeming like information overload. My only issue was that there were some concepts in this world that I wish would have been explained more. I hope to see more world/society development in the next book!

I liked the main character, Ellani, in a sense. I liked how nice and caring she was, but she did some really dumb things. I know not everyone is perfect, but I wish she would have been a better written character. I hope to see some more character development for her in the next book. I didn't hate her by any means, but I just wished she was a stronger character.

I liked Gus a lot in this book. I thought he was super sweet and adorable. I am hoping to see a lot more of him in the next book, and I hope there is more character development in store for him.

I am on the fence about the romance. I really wanted Ellani and Gus together. I thought they would be a super cute couple. However, I wanted it to develop different. I thought their romance felt like insta-love. I would have rather seen them have a slow burning romance that developed throughout the series. However, Ellani and Gus did have a lot of chemistry, which I enjoyed.

The beginning and the ending of this book were extremely exciting and engrossing. I could not put the book down! That being said, the book did seem to drag a little bit in the middle. I was hoping for the excitement level to be high throughout the entire book. The beginning and the ending of this book were amazing, and I am so excited to see what the next book has in store! If anyone is looking for a YA dystopian book, then I definitely think they should check out this book.
