Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Lux #3

Third in the series. Please don't read if you haven't read the first two books.

Daemon and Katy are together. But they are still very affected by the death of their friend.

They are aware of an organization that is testing hybrids. They are also aware the onyx is extremely dangerous to them.

When Blake comes back insisting he has a way in into where Beth is captive, Dawson jumps at the idea.

We meet new characters and a new stone that can increase their powers.

The end of the book is heart-wrenching and I can't believe I need to wait that long for the next book.

Katy's and Daemon's romance is beautifully crafted. Daemon keeps on being sarcastic but also very sweet and romantic. He will do anything to keep "Kitten" safe.

Daemon smiled a little. Not a full breathtaking kind of smile, but it still reached down into me, wrapping around my heart. “I know you’re good inside. You’re warmth and light and everything I don’t deserve, but you—you believe that I deserve you. Knowing all that I have done in my past to other people and to you, you still believe I deserve you.”

4.5/5 Fangs - just because I hate cliffhangers.

Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Lux #2

Please read Obsidian before reading this review.

Katy now shares a connection with Daemon. She has become a hybrid. She also thinks that the connection with Daemon is affecting her feelings for her. She is trying to keep him at arm's length. It is pretty hard when she falling for Mr. Allien.

To makes things edgier the Department of Defense is in town and if they find out that Daemon is powerful and that Katy has powers now, they may take them both away.

They also have to think about a human/alien relationship won't be welcome in the Lux society. Also, there is a new boy in school. He immediately seeks Kathy and tells her that he can help her.

She begins training with a not so happy Daemon.

Daemon makes fun of Blake by changing his name constantly. And he is extremely jealous of his time with Katy.

Who is deceiving who?

This is a second great book in the series. Love the bad boy Daemon and his banter with Katy.

“I didn’t move that chair, Kitten.”
“I know.”
“I’m assuming you didn’t like where it was?”
“It was in your way,” I said. My hands were still curled around his arms.
“I can see that.” Daemon smoothed a fingertip over the curve of my bottom lip before taking my hand, pulling me up. Letting go, he watched me carefully and waited. Waited for…

What had happened slowly sank in beyond the fog in my brain. I’d just kissed him. Again. And right after he’d taken over my date with another guy—the guy I should be kissing. Or not. I didn’t know anything anymore.

“We can’t keep doing this.” My voice shook. “We—”

“We like each other,” he said, stepping forward, grasping the edges of the table on either side of me. “And before you say it, we were attracted to each other before I healed you. You can’t say that’s not true.”

He leaned in, his nose brushing my cheek. A shudder rolled through me. His lips pressed against the spot under my ear. “We need to stop fighting what we both want.”

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Lux #1

Katy Swartz has moved to West Virginia. Her mom has decided her memories of her dad who died three years ago is too painful. So leaving sunny Florida is the best choice.

When Kathy knocks on her next-door neighbor's door she can't close her mouth. The boy in front of her is gorgeous with beautiful green eyes. When he starts talking she wants him to close his mouth. Daemon Black comes out as an arrogant pretty boy.

This, in some ways, changed through the book.

It turns out Daemon and his twin sister Dee (who becomes Kathy's best friend) are aliens. They are Luxen. Some parts of the government knows about them and even provides funds to them. They can manage the light. Their enemies are the Arum and they can handle the shadows.

When Daemon saves her life, she becomes like a beacon to an Arum. In order to survive, she will need to stay close to Daemon.

I like Katy as a character. She is not defenseless. She can banter with Daemon till the next new year. I also like that she has a blog and reviews paranormal, UF books. I love it when Daemon calls her Kitten.

The plot was good and it kept my interest to the end.

When I started reading, I didn't know Daemon was an alien. So this is my first book about aliens. Happily surprised.

“I’ve always found that the most beautiful people, truly beautiful inside and out, are the ones who are quietly unaware of their effect.” His eyes searched mine intently, and for a moment we stood there toe to toe. “The ones who throw their beauty around, waste what they have? Their beauty is only passing. It’s just a shell hiding nothing but shadows and emptiness.”- Daemon

Avoiding Responsibility (Avoiding #2) by K.A. Linde

I guess I'm a sucker for book punishment. I read this book minutes after I finished Avoiding Commitment.
The sequel started with Lexi in bed with Mystery Man, when she receives a call. Guess who? nope, not the bastard. This time it is Ramsey and he asks her to come to Jack's wedding. At first she says no. But she ends up back in Atlanta. A year has passed and she was with Ramsey but after she found out some lies about him, she left him.
Bekah is still evil and Jack keeps on messing with Lexi's head, confusing her more. It is painful to read how the relationship is so self destructing.
I love the ending of this book. It was very satisfying. The twist at the end was remarkable. Love Ramsey even more.
I just hope that the next one doesn't bring Jack again.

4/5 Fangs in punishment/deceit/closure/excitement.

Avoiding Commitment by K.A. Linde
Avoiding #1

Why did I read this book? It was torture. I don't know if I love it or hate it more. Not only did I read it, I finished it the same night, and what's worse, I started and finished book two at six am. Luckily it was Sunday.

Background: Alexis or Lexi has been in a relationship with Jack (bastard!) for six years. If you ask them- they were never together. After two years of not hearing from him, he calls her and asks her for help with his current girlfriend Bekah. Bekah wants to meet all his ex-girlfriends and try to understand his lack of commitment.

Lexi discusses this with her best friend Chyna. Who convinces her to go to get some closure.

We get flashbacks of their relationship. The people they hurt during the ride. The errors they both make.

Bekah is evil, but her brother Ramsey is the opposite. I really found myself wanting him to be her HEA. Take that Bekah!

This is a fun, fast little book. Predictable, but we love some predictable HEA, don't we?

I enjoyed this book. Love Andrew from the get go. Love the HEA idea.

I like all the brothers but Wraith reminds me of Zhadist which is my favorite BDB brother. So he had me at tortured soul.

Can enemies become lovers?
Many twists happen and all are welcome. Tayla also meets her long lost sister who is part demon.
The world building is fascinating and the secondary characters are great. Can't wait for their stories.
This was a great beginning to the series.

I recommend this book. It was fun reading the unmaking of Hunter. Vere was naive and sweet girl. The kiss was the best.

Kanin is the master vampire who saves her. When they are separated, she comes into contact with a human group who is looking for the cure. Part of the group is Zeke Crosse, he is loyal, truthful and a leader. For Allie is hard to keep up pretending to be human.

I like the world building and that the vampires are not portrayed as soft beings. I wished there was more Kanin in this book and more Zeke/Allie interaction.

When Jordan starts dating Ty, her relationship with Sam Henry starts to break. Henry has been her best friend and until Ty appears in her life, she didn't know how important he is to her.
This book is about dreams and waking up to the real world. It was entertaining and I thought Jordan was written in a perfect way.

Desire Unchained (Demonica #2) by Larissa Ione

We start book two with Shade (a Seminus Demon) and Runa in a Ghoul's dungeon. They have been trapped together. To Shade's horror someone he cares about has betrayed them and hates him and his brothers.

Runa is the girl whom he started having feelings for a year ago. He broke her heart when she found him in bed with two vampires. When she fled the apartment, she was then attacked by Luc and became a werewolf.

To make matters worse they are spelled to become life mates. This triggers the beginning of the curse or Maluncoeur. The "curse that promised if he fell in love, he'd slowly fade away until he became invisible to everyone. He'd live forever, wracked with stabbing hunger pangs, debilitating thirst, and unbearable sexual desire for all eternity."

There is the issue of Runa not being able to bond with someone who is not a werewolf too.

We catch up with the brothers, the Hospital UGH, and all the secondary characters.

The series gets better. The banter between brothers is fun to read. Reminds me of BDB at times.

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet (Charley Davidson #4) by Darynda Jones

Charley is recovering from the attack she suffered in the last book. She is having big time issues with agoraphobia. She has been buying multiple unnecessary things through the shopping channel and the boxes are covering the chair where she was tortured. She calls this area of her apartment Area 51. It has been two months since she has worked.
When a new client comes knocking she can't say no and when everyone thinks the young woman is lying, the more Charlie believes her.
She also breaks the two month no contact with Reyes Farrow, the son of Satan. She goes out and looks for him. She discovers he is performing cage fighting but it seems like he also may be fighting real demons too.
We get a glimpse of Donovan a couple of times that makes you want more interaction between him and Charley (sorry Reyes for cheating on you). Donovan is so well written. A biker with a great heart. (I may have a weakness for them- SOA Jax, Tack Motorcycle Man).
Book four has a nice flow, some action, a great scene between Reyes and Charley. Donovan is a plus. Her guardian is cute.

Iced (Dani O'Malley-Fever #6) by Karen Marie Moning

This is part 6 of the Fever Series. Recommend reading them in order.

Dani O'Malley is a fourteen year old girl who is leaving in Dublin after the Wall fell. The Fae are everywhere and she is trying to kill them all. Her Sword of Light and Mack's weapon are the only two tools that can do it.  She has many powers, super hearing, super speed and likes to think of herself as a super hero.
Ryodan is interested in Dani. He forces her to start working for him. She agrees because a friend's life is in danger.
Dani has many hiding places and she has some in common with Dancer.
Dancer is human, super smart, handsome geek a few years older than Dani. He has secrets we don't know about.
And to close the future romance circle we have Christian MacKeltar who is becoming an Unseelie Prince and seems to be obsessed with Dani.
In the middle of all this testosterone, something very dangerous is killing humans and Fae. People and places are being frozen and dying. There is a race to stop this before the world gets destroyed.
I gotta be honest here. I didn't like Dani in earlier books. With trepidation I started Iced and discover that I really liked the book. Ryodan is a super alpha male. KMM writes Dani in a way that you forget she is only 14. Can't wait for her to get older and see who she picks. Christian is a danger that you like to have around and Dancer he is the human boy holding secrets we need to know.
Why do I have to wait longer for the second book.

Spoiler Fangalert: I love that Ryodan bit her and now he can tell where she is at. Love the JZB cameo and can't wait for Mac's confrontation.

He is tall, wears a long black duster, open doors for ladies, he is honest and has a knack for getting into trouble.
The latest police case involves a mage killing a couple which goes against wizard laws in this world. Both victims are known employees of very important/dangerous people.
His PI case has to do with a missing husband. Harry has to solve both cases without getting himself killed.
I liked the world building, love Harry's personality. The skull made me laugh and the love interest is there too. I like the idea that vampires look different without their glamour. Knowing Harry is tempted to the dark, makes thing interesting for futures books. Will read the rest of the series.

Taylor Donovan is a successful lawyer. She is in California temporarily for a case involving sexual harassment. While there, she is told that a certain famous movie star will need her help with a script from his new movie project. She is upset about having to babysit the actor. But, when the actor stands her up twice she is furious.

When they meet Jason Andrews has never been turned down or denied of anything. He is arrogant and famous and thinks women are all interchangeable.

Jason is excited about meeting his match. He just needs to make Taylor understand this and trust him. On the other hand, she just came out of a serious relationship and the guy cheated on her. Being mistrustful is the best defense for her.

I read this book last and I do have to say I did not like it as much as the other ones. Maybe because I thought Jason was too arrogant. It was still an easy read, with funny lines and interesting secondary characters. I think this was Mrs James first book too.

Something About You (FBI / US Attorney #1) by Julie James

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron Lynde is trying to catch up on some sleep in a hotel room. Through the walls she can hear a couple having sex. Later on, she is awakened by noise in the next room. She goes to the peep hole but the only thing she sees is a man with a hoodie leaving through the stairs exit. She calls the hotel line to complain. Security comes up and finds the body of a female. She soon finds out a politician had been next door and she has become the star witness for his defense. The FBI makes their appearance, and no other than Jack Pallas shows up.
Jack and Cameron have a history. Three years ago, he told the world that she "had her head up her ass" after she was told not to prosecute a certain mafia criminal. Jack had been captured and tortured when his undercover operation was discovered by this same criminal.
Because of his actions, he is transfered to a different state. Now, just recently relocated to Chicago, the last thing he wanted was to see Cameron again.
As fate will have it, now they have to be together and he is in charge of her protection. Sparks are flying between them.
Great book, with great characters.

Practice Makes Perfect by Julie James

Payton Kendall is a lawyer for the Chicago firm Ripley & Davis. She is a workaholic. For eight years she has been trying to be the best at the firm. During this time, she also had a continuos competition with J.D. Jameson. J.D. is an attractive rich attorney.

As fate will have it, they are forced to work together bringing a new account into the firm. They also are told that only one of them will become partner. At the beginning this is devastating news to both of them because they have worked extremely hard to achieve partnership position. Later, this makes for very funny reading as we see both characters trying to get the upper hand. The gloves are off and all is permitted during war ...or is it ..love??

Enjoyed it tremendously!
This is my first Julie James book, but it won't be my last. She is added to my contemporary writers as a must read.

Death's Rival (Jane Yellowrock #5) by Faith Hunter

Jane, our little Vampire Hunter is still working for Leo. She is now sent to two different states to retrieve blood samples from sick vampires.
A new master is getting vampires under his wing, if they don't plegde to him, they get infected with a disease that can kill them.
During these two trips, Jane is attacked. Again, Beast comes to the rescue.
As Leo's Enforcer she is to have a blood Bond with Leo. She is trying to avoid this.
Jane decides to hire two guys to form her own team. The older brother, Eli is a fighter and he shows some interest in Jane. The younger brother is a geek tech guy.
At the end Jane may need to confront the New Master, but can she survive this fight?
As much as I like this series, I was disappointed with Jane's unresolved love life- I mean how many guys have showed interest in her. Rick (who could infect her), Bruiser (who is under Leo's dominance) Leo (who is a bastard in this book) and now Eli. I may wait until the series is done to read the rest otherwise I may throw my Kindle to the wall the next time Jane doesn't know who she wants.
Beast on the other hand is darn smart. Jane should listen to Beast for a change.

Spoiler Fangalert: Leo forcing the bond on her is callous and worse is that he uses poor Bruiser to hurt Jane. One sentence Bruiser is awesome the next Bruiser is forcing her to do something she doesn't want. I think Jane needs to pack her bags and leave forever. No money is worth it. Saying that I still like Bruiser better than Rick.

Raven Cursed (Jane Yellowrock #4) by Faith Hunter

4th book

This installment begins with Jane going to Asheville, NC as a bodyguard. She is taking care of the security between the meetings involving Gregoire, sent by the MOC from New Orleans (Leo Pellissier) and the master vampire who wants his own clan to claim a territory.
Also, Evil Evie is making deals and using her powers for no good. This puts a strain in Jane's friendship with Molly.
Also, she is dealing with Rick's betrayal and at the same time trying to help him shift. He may die if she doesn't find a way to help him.
Worse of all there are rogue werewolves on a killing spree. They are trying to get Jane's attention. So in her spare time, Jane is helping the police find the rogues. Her life is in danger multiple times but thanks to Beast she always has an ace up her sleeve.
Let's just say that I found this book lacking something...hmmm...oh I know- BRUISER. Why can't we get more Bruiser. I know Jane is probably going to end up with Rick, but I want Jane to explore her relationship with Bruiser further. As secondary characters,  the twins did a great job.

Pink Satin by Jennifer Greene

Greer Lothrop is a young psychologist who works for a lingerie company as an analyst. She has all the right curves, unfortunately that has made her life difficult.
Early in life she decided to start playing motherly towards men to distract them from her looks. This has worked for many years.

Recently, she started having prank calls and she could only hear the other person breath on the line. The phone calls are getting to her. Tying to run away from her apartment, she finds herself at the stairs. This is how she meets her new neighbor Ryan McCullough. They strike a conversation. Greer tells him about the Breather. He goes back into the apartment with her and leaves when he is sure she is doing better.

Ryan is very competent and decides that his new neighbor needs protection. They seek each others company after that day. Greer doesn't know what to do with Ryan. He doesn't fall for her mother hen act.

This is a cute little book. I just thought that a psychologist wouldn't have so many insecurities about her own body.

There are so many good parts, but what I love the most is how geeky Faith is. She loves Scify, She mentions, Buffy, Angel, Star wars and Firefly references.

Alexa Anne (Lexy) Berry has had bad Luck all her life, when she is forced to pick up someone being release from prison, she is completely shocked to see this hot giant coming out. He exudes danger. When he proposes a marriage that can release her from prior entanglement, she jumps to it. They get to Vegas and marry.

Even if they are able to make this marriage work, can they live happily in a place where dirty cops and government exists?
Love Ty. Even though  the writing is completely crude at times, it really created live characters to the reader. Is amazing what KA can do!

“I don’t know!” I hissed back. “Tate went out of town and he took me for a ride on his bike and he kissed me before he left. But he didn’t tell me he was going. He just said he wanted me on the back of his bike when he got back. But then he was gone. For a month. He didn’t call. Nothing. He just vanished. Then I got my car from Wood and he said he’d seen me on Tate’s bike and he didn’t want to tell me what he had to tell me because he wanted me to be on the back of his bike but then he told me Tate was with Neeta, Wood’s sister, and she’s married.

“The back of his bike?” she asked, looking confused.

I shook my head. “I don’t know, I don’t get it. I think it’s biker slang for they want a date or something.”

“What did Tate say about what Wood said?”
This was the tricky part therefore I mumbled, “Um…”
“What?” she asked.
“I didn’t ask him,” I admitted. “When he got back…” I moved even closer, “Carrie, when he got back I think he came straight to me, straight to the bar, he grabbed my hand and pulled me into the hall and kissed me and told me he didn’t find Tonia’s killer but it was good to be home then I threw the whole Neeta thing in his face, he got pissed, said some nasty stuff and stormed off.”

The Gamble (Colorado Mountain #1) by Kristen Ashley

First in the Colorado Series

Nina Sheridan is taking a holliday. She has decided that she needs time to think if she wants to spend the rest of her life with her clueless fiancee. She thinks a trip to the States will clarify everything for her.
When she gets to the house she has rented, to her surprise there is a hot guy there, who is the owner of the home and tells her she can't stay there. (Max calls her Duchess which later on becomes a term of endearment). Things get worse for her, she has a cold, her car breaks down and she can't get out of it because of the snowstorm.
When she wakes up the next day, she is his bed.
Holden Maxwell has had plenty of sorrow in his life. But, when Nina shows up, it is the first time in a long time that he feels something. He nurses her back to health and forces her to stay with him in his home.  Typical Alpha maneuver.
They get to know each other and he shows her around the town of Gnaw Bone, but of course there is always a couple of other story lines happening which being a KA book leads to kidnapping, confrontations, murder, etc.
This is a good book and a great beginning for this series.

My Jane Austen Summer: A Season in Mansfield Park by Cindy Jones

Lily Berry  is escaping to a Jane Austen revival. She has had multiple losses. Her mother passed away, her father is in a relationship way too soon, her boyfriend dumped her while her mother was ill and told her she was needy. She looses her job because she is reading instead of working.
When she gets to England she has no job at the beginning and uses one of the rooms that was assigned to another girl. When Bets her roommate finally shows up, she is not considerate of Lily's personal belongings.
Lily is able to find things to do around the Manor, even create a tea party with entertainment for the Jainetes.
Her love life is tangled between different men.

I have got to say this is my first Jane Austen world kind of book. Loving Jane Austen's books I thought this would be great, was greatly disappointed. I don't believe there was great character growth and the protagonist was not very likable.

Resurrected Book 1 The Vampire Legacy by Morgan Rice

Resurrected is the first book in the Vampire Legacy.

We meet a happy family. Mom is Caitlin, Dad is Caleb (nice name) and perfect daughter is Scarlet.
Everything is happy in this perfect family. They are all excited about Scarlet's sixteenth birthday. Caitlin has bought her daughter's favorite cake and will give her her grandmother's necklace as a gift. Scarlet surprises them by bringing Blake, her friend to their home. Everyone accepts this including her dad after a few comments. This will be their last normal day.
When Caitlin remembers her old books given to her by her grandmother, during her sleepless night, she decides to read them. In them, she discovers she used to be a vampire and now Scarlet is becoming one too. Too late, Scarlet has started her change, she is sent home sick from school and then escapes. When she finally reappears the next day, everyone has been looking for her. Scarlet hates the attention and wants to go to school. She is worried about Blake and the mean girls group.
We also meet Sage, an immortalist who has been selected to deal with the last known vampire, Scarlet.
The end of the book is a little bit abrupt. I haven't read the Vampire journals which comes first. Maybe if I did I will have enjoyed this book more.
