Autumn Thorns (Whisper Hollow #1)
by Yasmine Galenorn

In an all-new series, New York Times bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn invites readers to Whisper Hollow, where spirits walk among the living and the lake never gives up her dead…

Fifteen years ago, I ran away from Whisper Hollow, Washington, a small town on Crescent Lake in the Olympic Peninsula. But truth is, if you were born here, you can never really leave. I’m Kerris Fellwater, and when I returned, I inherited my grandmother’s house—and her gift. As a spirit shaman, it’s my responsibility to drive the dead back to their graves, because around Whisper Hollow, people—and secrets—don’t always stay buried.

When I was little, I was told my mother ran off. But now it looks like she was murdered. With the help of my mysterious neighbor Bryan, we begin to unravel the mystery of her disappearance, and in doing so, unearth a dark force seeking to bury Whisper Hollow. Now I must work with the dead, rather than against them, because our enemy will do whatever she can to destroy the town, and she means to start with me.

From the moment I started Autumn Thorns I knew it was going to be good. There are rules you must follow to stay alive in the town of Whisper Hollow.

After fifteen years away, Kerris Fellwater is back in her hometown. She left after she had an awful fight with her grandfather but now that her grandmother has passed it is up to her, as the spirit shaman, to take over after the family business. Her job is to make sure the dead remain dead. The power is inherited from mothers to daughters. Every shaman has two people to help her, one is a shapeshifter mate and another one is a lament singer.

Soon after getting back home, Kerris discovers that she grew up in a house full of secrets and now she is learning the truth she needs to avenge her mother and to keep herself and the people she cares for alive.

Coming home reunites her with her best friend Peggin, the only person she kept in touch with while she was away. She also meets her seriously hot neighbor Bryan. She's attracted to him and she feels like she can trust him. But, Bryan is hiding a secret too.

This book is full of interesting premises and characters. There are many secrets to unveil and Kerris has a long road ahead of her. She is a strong female character who's not afraid to face her duty, to admit her feelings and to fight for what's right. Bryan was supportive, caring and strong. Her perfect match!

I like Peggin, she had Kerris's back one-hundred percent. I know she has a special gift like most people who live in Whisper Hollow.

I'm interested in some of the characters that were mentioned but were not given enough page time to fully develop.

If you like Urban Fantasy this is a book you will not won't want to miss.

Cliffhanger: No

I was in the mood for a good Urban Fantasy, so I decided to give this book a try. I am so happy that I picked up this book, because totally satisfied my craving.

Yasmine created an extremely interesting world that I still want to learn more about. The city held so many secrets, and I wanted to unfold all of the secrets. I also really enjoyed the cast of characters, and I cannot wait to see them again in the next book. Kerris, the main character, was a strong and resourceful female character that I adored. The main male character, Bryan was a strong and caring guy. I thought he was perfect! I really liked him with Kerris. My only issue with their romance was that I thought it developed a little too quickly. However, when I looked past that, Kerris and Bryan were cute together and I loved their chemistry.

This book was paced very well. There was action, mystery, friendships, and romance. I really enjoyed this book, and I cannot wait to read more of this series.

After reading so many contemporary books recently I decided to change it up and delve into a fantasy read, and I am certainly glad I chose Autumn Thorns! This story started off mysterious and eerie. It had me engaged right away. It's set in the Pacific Northwest which I love because I grew up not far from the area where Whisper Hollow would be located. Through the detailed description I pictured the area so vividly in my mind's eye.

Kerris has been living in Seattle for the past 15 years when her grandparents pass away in a car accident and she is required to go back to fulfill her duties and a Spirit Shaman, which means she has a connection with the dead. Her job is to drive the dead back to their graves when they are out on solid ground, and Whisper Hollow is full of them. Whisper Hollow has always been shrouded in mystery and now that Kerris is back she's making it her mission to uncover some of those mysteries. As she works to figure out her abilities and how to drive back the dead, she's also discovering a lot about her family's past. The only problem is when she finally gets an answer to one question, two more questions seems to pop up in its place. With the help of a few friends she will try to discover what happened to both of her parents, and it won't stop there.

I love the way this story is weaved together. It is so very detailed and well thought out. I love how creepy it felt reading about all of the different kinds of spirits, as well as all of the key players and their abilities in this misty town. All of the lore that is weaved into it just adds to its appeal too! Such a fantastic beginning to what I think is going to be an amazing series!
