Starflight (Starflight #1)
by Melissa Landers

Life in the outer realm is a lawless, dirty, hard existence, and Solara Brooks is hungry for it. Just out of the orphanage, she needs a fresh start in a place where nobody cares about the engine grease beneath her fingernails or the felony tattoos across her knuckles. She's so desperate to reach the realm that she's willing to indenture herself to Doran Spaulding, the rich and popular quarterback who made her life miserable all through high school, in exchange for passage aboard the spaceliner Zenith.

When a twist of fate lands them instead on the Banshee, a vessel of dubious repute, Doran learns he's been framed on Earth for conspiracy. As he pursues a set of mysterious coordinates rumored to hold the key to clearing his name, he and Solara must get past their enmity to work together and evade those out for their arrest. Life on the Banshee may be tumultuous, but as Solara and Doran are forced to question everything they once believed about their world—and each other—the ship becomes home, and the eccentric crew family. But what Solara and Doran discover on the mysterious Planet X has the power to not only alter their lives, but the existence of everyone in the universe...

I was expecting to enjoy this book, but I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did! This book had action, a wide range of interesting characters, romance, humor and friendships. It truly had a little bit of everything!

The main character, Solara, was a tough and snarky girl.

I loved how she would stand up for herself and for the people she cared about. She was an extremely loyal person who would do anything for the people she cares about. I really liked learning more about her, and watching her open up to the characters in the book. Watching her relationships develop with the characters in the book was one of my favorite things about this book. I thought Solara was a great female lead.

The other main character was Doran. I seriously hated Doran at first. He was rude, conceded, and just an all around jerk. I figured the he and Solara would fall in love, but I didn't know if I was going to be able to get behind the romance because I disliked him that much. I was surprised that I ended up adoring their romance and Doran! Doran went through a lot of character development in the book, and that is when I started to fall for him. Now, he is definitely on my list of book boyfriends. I adore him!

His love/hate relationship with Solara was fantastic. I enjoyed watching them fall in love with each other. The romance worked really well in this book. It was perfectly paced, and it felt realistic. Plus, the fights between Doran and Solara were hilarious! I SHIP SOLARA AND DORAN SO HARD. I NEED MORE OF THEM IN MY LIFE.

Overall, this was an exciting and fast paced novel. As soon as I started this book, I couldn't put it down. I was completely hooked! Melissa's writing flowed really well, and it was extremely addictive. The romance and characters were all well written. Each character had a story arc that felt realistic and satisfying. The fantasy element was extremely interesting, and I cannot wait to learn more about it. I felt like there could have been more world building in this book, but I am hoping to see more of that in the next book.

Speaking of the next book, I AM SO EXCITED TO READ IT! It is going to feature all of the characters from this book, but Solara and Doran won't be the main characters. They will be the side characters in the next book, and two side characters from this book with be the main characters for the next book. I am so excited to see more of Solara, Doran, and the rest of the gang! It is going to be a painful wait for book two.
