Overruled (The Legal Briefs #1) by Emma Chase

There's something about the way Emma Chase tells a story that I just love. Like the Tangled series, Sofia and Stanton's story was the perfect mix of funny moments and sexiness, with characters I adored.

Stanton and Jenny had a surprise their senior year of high school, little Presley. Deciding it was the best thing for their family, he headed off to college in New York as planned. Leaving his girls behind with a promise to visit often.

"It has only ever been you - in every way that matters. What happens when we're apart, only means somethin' if we let it mean somethin'."

Fast forward ten years and he's a big shot attorney in D.C. He's confident, a little cocky and full of southern charm. Yum. Did I mention he's Drew's frat brother?

Young love is strong. First love is powerful. But what you don't know when you're young - what you can't know - is how long life actually is.

He's had a friends with benefits situation going on with one of his colleagues, Sofia, for months. They're great together, honestly. She fiery and fun and challenges him whenever possible. She's tried not to let her feeling get involved, but they have a pretty intense connection, which has made it almost impossible.

For some reason, Stanton can't see what's right in front of him. He's holding on way too tight to the past. Somehow, Sofia lets Stanton talk her into going home with him and being his voice of reason, while he tries to convince Jenny they belong together. Sometimes things have a funny way of working out though.

"I look at you and I see a thousand summer days. The best moments of my life."

This story wasn't at all what I expected going in. The openness to Stanton and Jenny's relationship caught me off guard at first, but it worked. Their situation was different and I appreciated that. It was cute the way things worked out. Stanton left me with a smile on my face.

"You know what else looks good on me?"
"What?"
"You."

Stanton Shaw is a defense attorney. He lives in DC, while the love of his life Jenny lives in Mississippi with his 10 year old daughter Presley Evelyn Shaw. He is successful and no one can resist his charm. Winning cases is his forte especially if the jury has a higher female percentage.
When he discovers Jenny is getting married he leaves everything behind to fight for her. Well, almost everything, he takes with him Sofia, his friend with benefits.

SPOILERS:

It's with sadness in my heart that I have to admit this book didn't do it for me. I love Emma's Tangled Series but I found myself disappointed with Overruled.  Stanton, supposedly a smart lawyer, seemed to be completely obtuse about his surroundings. He thought his agreement with Sofia was enough to bring her with him to fight for the love of his life? If you love someone with all your heart like he said he did he wouldn't have cheated. And Jenny, letting him continue doing it is even worse. The conflict in the story felt false to me. I mean Jenny lets him leave for ten years!!! It only seems like Stanton wanted Jenny when someone else does. And Sofia, agreeing to be the friends with benefits while Stanton's situation with Jenny was still unclear, didn't help the plot.
This book even made me dislike the college Drew and that's saying a lot.
