Hold Me (Fool's Gold #16) by Susan Mallery

Hold Me

Work has brought Destiny Mills to the town of Fool’s Gold. She is the facilitator for her company’s program STORM. This program helps locate people who are lost. She is going to be working with ex-gold medal ski star Kipling Gilmore. Destiny tries to live a calm existence. No drama, no sex, no excitement. She never stays in a town for too long and doesn’t have any real friends. Her famous parents’s love life made her vow against any strong emotions. She doesn’t like admitting that she’s attracted to Nick. Her careful life plan didn’t include a hot guy like him, neither did it included dealing with her half sister Starr moving in with her.

“The sensible marriage without sex between two like-minded people. For the greater good.”
She brightened. “Exactly.”
“Good luck with that.”
She looked away. “I knew you wouldn’t be interested.”
He swore silently. “You considered me as a candidate?”
“I wasn’t sure. You seemed to have a lot of really good qualities. But I figured the sex thing would be an issue.”

Nick lost the one thing he loved the most, skiing. When he was offered a job to move into Fool’s Gold by the Major Marsh, in exchange, the Major promised his sister Shelby a safe place to live. Nick is trying to move on, he has opened a new bar called The Man Cave and he’s also starting the search and rescue program, HERO. He’s not crazy about the name but the town voted on it. He also didn’t plan on being attracted to the calm red haired woman he has to work with. Although, as a serial monogamist he can modify his plans.

Hold Me was a sweet story. I liked both characters. Destiny did seem to be naive at times but even that trait didn’t bother me. (Don’t get me started in some of her exchanges with Nick, they were hilarious). She was trying to do her best with the new changes in her life. From having to take care of a sister she never met, to making new friendships, accepting a part of herself she has kept hidden, to dealing with her feelings for Nick.  Nick was a go getter. He was always trying to fix everyone’s problems. He was also reliable and protective. Perfect hero!

I liked how the story progressed and many of the secondary characters made me want to go back and read the other fifteen books I’m missing. I know I’m going to buy the next one in the series. So many new characters who are begging to tell their stories.

“You’re going to want sex, aren’t you?”
He did his best not to smile. “Yes, I am.”
“A lot?”
“It depends on your definition of a lot.”
She nodded, as if she’d expected the answer. “I’m not going to like it, but you can do it whenever you want. I won’t say no.”
Now he did smile. “Thank you for that.”

HOLD ME by Susan Mallery is book 16 in the FOOL’S GOLD ROMANCE series.  HOLD ME is the first book I’ve read in this series.  At first I was worried I would miss so much because I didn’t read the previous books, but I am so glad I decided to pick it up and give it a shot.  It. Was. So. Good!

Destiny Mills is the daughter of two superstar country singers so it’s safe to say she had a very unconventional childhood.  A past full of drama and chaos, she prides herself in being in control of her life.  A life without passion, romance, love, and sex.  She’s seen firsthand what those things do to relationships, so she makes a vow to not let those things rule her life.

“Sex was the root of all evil.  She’d learned that early, too.  She’d never let herself be swept away, which was a point of pride for her.  No hormone was more powerful than her determination, and nothing about that was every going to change.”

When she goes to Fool’s Gold on a temporary assignment, she meets Kipling.  Kipling is an Olympic gold medalist that had an awful accident a couple years ago leaving him unable to compete.   When he meets Destiny he decides that a little bit of fun is just what he needs.  Will Destiny let stick to her beliefs about sex and passion, or will she let her hormones take control?

**

I just want to say, once again, that I really enjoyed this book.  I love small town stories and this one did not disappoint.  Destiny was such an entertaining character to read about.  Her philosophy on love and relationships broke my heart and opened my eyes at the same time.  I wanted to yell and scream at her parents for making her so jaded about love.

Kipling was so funny.  He knew he wanted Destiny from the beginning and it was so cute watching Destiny try to resist him.

“Let me be clear,” she said by way of greeting.  “I will not be your plaything.”

He looked up at her and grinned.  “Why not? I’m happy to be yours.”

I am so excited that I found a new series to read.  The background stories and characters were so entertaining that now I need to go back and read ALL of the previous books!

HOLD ME is a sweet, entertaining story about finding love when you least expect it.  Pick it up…. you won’t be disappointed.
