Once Upon a Dream (Twisted Tales #2)
by Liz Bramwell

What if the sleeping beauty never woke up? Once Upon a Dream marks the second book in a new YA line that reimagines classic Disney stories in surprising new ways.

It should be simple--a dragon defeated, a slumbering maiden, a prince poised to wake her. But when said prince falls asleep as soon as his lips meet the princess's, it is clear that this fairy tale is far from over.

With a desperate fairy's last curse infiltrating her mind, Princess Aurora will have to navigate a dangerous and magical landscape deep in the depths of her dreams. Soon she stumbles upon Phillip, a charming prince eager to join her quest. But with Maleficent's agents following her every move, Aurora struggles to discover who her true allies are, and moreover, who she truly is. Time is running out. Will the sleeping beauty be able to wake herself up?

I absolutely love Disney movies, so I knew I had to pick this book up. I love reading fairy tale retellings, so I was excited to see what this author would do with one of my favorite Disney movies. I went into this book with really high exceptions. I wanted to love this book, and I was expecting to love this book. However, this book just fell flat for me.

One thing I did like about this book was the unique twist the author put to this classic tale. The premise was really interesting and I have not read retelling like this one before.

The main character, Aurora, was kind of meh. I love Aurora in the Disney movie, but I didn't like her as much in this book. Aurora was extremely childish and actually quite annoying in this book. I liked seeing her become a stronger woman, but the journey there was a bit hard to enjoy due to her immaturity. It was also hard to like her character due to the writing of this story. The writing style was jarring and inconsistent, which made it harder to enjoy this book.

Philip was adorable, but all of his scenes with Aurora were...odd. I was underwhelmed by their romance. I was expecting to love that aspect of the book, so that was a disappointment for me.

Maleficent's character had some interesting development, and I am glad the author included that in the story.

Overall, this book had great potential, but it just fell flat. I would like to read more books in this series, because I think this series really can be great! I am an avid Disney fan, so I would love for this series to continue to improve. I think the author has great potential! I read that the next book is about Beauty and the Beast , so I definitely plan on reading that book once it comes out.

Even though I didn't love this book, I would still recommend that people check this book out if they are interested. I think people who love Disney movies, especially Sleeping Beauty , should give this book a chance and see if it works for them.
