The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1) by Julie Kagawa
Allison Sekemoto is a survivor. She lives by finding food anyway she can. She is an unregistered. Humans have succumbed to a the Red Lung virus. The world is ruled by vampires and humans are marked as cattle who give their blood to the vampires. In exchange they are fed by them. Allie has never wanted to be part of the "cattle". She lives with other unregistered. Unfortunately, one night she is attacked by Rabids and when she is given a choice, she picks to become the thing she hates, a vampire.
Kanin is the master vampire who saves her. When they are separated, she comes into contact with a human group who is looking for the cure. Part of the group is Zeke Crosse, he is loyal, truthful and a leader. For Allie is hard to keep up pretending to be human.
I like the world building and that the vampires are not portrayed as soft beings. I wished there was more Kanin in this book and more Zeke/Allie interaction.
