Gates of Thread and Stone (Gates of Thread and Stone #1) by Lori M. Lee

A beautiful cover, time travel, adventure, romance, and a strong sibling relationship? That sounds like an amazing book to me!

Unfortunately, it just fell flat.

This book was really disappointing, because I had really high hopes for it! The first 20% of the book was really interesting, and I was flying through the book. After that, I felt like the book began to drag. I just got really bored. This "adventure" felt more like just Kai pining over Avan. I love a good romance, but this one was just bland. I really did not see the romantic connection between Kai and Avan. I felt like they were friends pretending to be in love? Some scenes between them were cute, but they were not really believable for the characters.

Speaking of the characters, I really did not like Kai. I was expecting Kai to be a badass or become a badass, but she really wasn't. I would have been okay with her growing into a badass, but she spent most of the time just talking about how attractive Avan was. I was tired of hearing about how attractive Avan was. I wanted more action or anything really. I felt like the romance just wasn't developed well, and it made the story drag.

“I leaned against his side and felt his arm circle my shoulders. Even though I knew it wasn’t true, I imagined his warmth like a Sun that shone just for me.”

I was disappointed with this book because it had such great potential. As I said earlier, the first 20% of the book was really good, but then it just went astray. I kept reading because I kept feeling like something interesting had to happen. I am giving this book 3 stars because when the book was interesting, it was so good! It just fell flat a lot, and the angst made the book boring and repetitive. The last couple chapters were also interesting, so I am interested to read the next book. However, I am hoping the next book has more action and plot, and less angst.
