HIS by Brenda Rothert

Quinn

I’d say I’m down on my luck, but that’s an understatement. I’m flat on my ass. Homeless, hungry and in hiding with my little sister at the age of twenty-one, I’ve never been so desperate. I’ve hit rock bottom when I get an offer I can’t refuse. Sell my body to save my sister? There’s nothing I won’t do to keep her safe. I make the rules and I’m not afraid to defend myself if this rich guy crosses the line. But once I see beneath his cold, calculating façade, the lines aren’t so clear anymore.

Andrew

She’s an intoxicating mix of tough and vulnerable I’ve never known before. This homeless woman who fits right into my upper-class world is running from someone powerful, and I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her. But Quinn isn’t meant to be controlled, so I’m forced to choose between owning her and loving her. I’ve finally met my match, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make her truly mine.

And I Darken (The Conquerors Saga #1)
by Kiersten White

NO ONE EXPECTS A PRINCESS TO BE BRUTAL.

And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets.

Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, who’s expected to rule a nation, Radu feels that he’s made a true friend—and Lada wonders if she’s finally found someone worthy of her passion.

But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against—and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point.

When I read the synopsis of this book, I knew I needed to read it as soon as possible. I had high expectations for this book, and it lived up to almost all of my expectations. There were a few things I didn't like about this book, but I really enjoyed it as a whole.

The beginning of the book felt quite slow for me. I liked learning about the world and the characters, but I still thought the pacing was slow. It took a while for me to really get into the book. Parts of the book were slow in the middle as well, but the end definitely made up for the slow parts.

Even though parts of the book were slow, I did enjoy White's writing style. The words in this book were exquisitely put together! This book was dark and brutal. I thought it was really refreshing to read a book that didn't hold back on the brutality.

I liked how much history was weaved into this book. It was obvious that White did a lot of research on these historical characters and this time period. The setting was addictive. I constantly wanted to learn more about it! I loved being in the world that White brought to life on the pages.

Another thing White really nailed in this was book was characterization for Lada and Radu. Radu was such a sweet boy. I constantly wanted to give him a hug. I felt so bad for him through a majority of this book. I just want Radu to received the love and affection that he deserves! Lada was a badass. She was tough and never backed down. I loved seeing her feminist views and seeing her fight for equal respect. That was probably my favorite part of this book!

“On our wedding night,” she said, “I will cut out your tongue and swallow it. Then both tongues that spoke our marriage vows will belong to me, and I will be wed only to myself. You will most likely choke to death on your own blood, which will be unfortunate, but I will be both husband and wife and therefore not a widow to be pitied.”

One thing that annoyed me sometimes about Lada was how harsh she was to the people who cared about her. I understood why she was so dark and stubborn, but it would have been nice to see her be a little warmer towards those people. I am hoping to see her open up a little more in future books. However, I still I want her to still be a powerful woman who doesn't take crap from anyone. #SlayQueen

I am really looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a historical YA novel that doesn't hold anything back. I have a feeling that this series will be an epic one.

Empire of Dust (Blood of Gods and Royals #2)
by Eleanor Herman

HARLEQUIN TEEN
June 28, 2016
384 pp.
ISBN: 9780373211920

In Macedon, war rises like smoke, forbidden romance blooms and ancient magic tempered with rage threatens to turn an empire to dust

After winning his first battle, Prince Alexander fights to become the ruler his kingdom demands—but the line between leader and tyrant blurs with each new threat.

Meanwhile, Hephaestion, cast aside by Alexander for killing the wrong man, must conceal the devastating secret of a divine prophecy from Katerina even as the two of them are thrust together on a dangerous mission to Egypt.

The warrior, Jacob, determined to forget his first love, vows to eradicate the ancient Blood Magics and believes that royal prisoner Cynane holds the key to Macedon's undoing.

And in chains, the Persian princess Zofia still longs to find the Spirit Eaters, but first must grapple with the secrets of her handsome—and deadly—captor.

New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Herman entwines the real scandals of history with epic fantasy to reimagine the world's most brilliant ruler, Alexander the Great, in the second book of the Blood of Gods and Royals series.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Legacy of Kings , so I was extremely excited to get my hands on this book! This book definitely did not disappoint. I love Eleanor's writing style and the way that she seamlessly weaved historical facts into her story. I never felt like I was being bogged down with historical information, but I still felt like I was learning a lot. Eleanor clearly did a lot of research for this series, and it paid off!

There were also so many twists and turns that I was not expecting throughout this book. Eleanor was able to keep me on the edge of my seat through most of the chapters.

I really enjoy multiple POVs in a book, but it was hard to for me to enjoy every POV in this book. I like some characters a lot more than other characters, so I did find myself wanting to skim the chapters of certain characters. I thought some of the storylines with certain characters felt unnecessary compared to storylines of other characters. I mainly wanted to read about Heph, Kat, and Zofia. They are my favorite characters, and I thought they had the most interesting chapters in this book.

I am a huge romantic, so I was eating up the romance in this book. I don't want to spoil anything, but certain ships sailed and new ships were formed in this book. I loved it! Eleanor is an expert at creating a slow burning romance with great tension. There were two couples that I adored in this book, and I am so excited to see their relationships develop more in the next book!

The ending of this book just made me want more! I am really looking forward to seeing what Eleanor has in store for us in the next book. I cannot wait to be reunited with Heph, Kat, and Zofia!

If you were a fan of Legacy of Kings , then I definitely recommend picking up Empire of Dust .

Tough Luck Hero by Maisey Yates

Title: Tough Luck Hero
Series: Copper Ridge #6
Author: Maisey Yates
Publisher: HQN Books
Release Date: June 28, 2016

Can the golden boy of Copper Ridge, Oregon, get a second chance at happy-ever-after?

Ranching heir Colton West knew his wedding would be the talk of the town. But he didn't expect to get left at the altar—or to escape on the next flight to Vegas with Lydia Carpenter, the woman who gets under his skin like no one else. The only thing crazier than honeymooning with Lydia is waking up married to her. So why does he find himself entertaining his new wife's desire to stay married—and fantasizing about a real wedding night?

As Copper Ridge's prospective mayor, Lydia can't risk a divorce scandal so close to election time. But pretending to be blissfully in love with her new husband is more confusing than she'd thought. For a man who's always rubbed her the wrong way, Colton suddenly seems to know exactly what to do with his hands. And his lips. Now Lydia's wildest mistake could turn out to be her luckiest move, if they're both willing to take the ultimate gamble…

I have read a few books in the Cooper Ridge series and I've always liked them but after reading Tough Luck Hero, I know this one is my favorite.

So what happens when you mix two type A, strong, determined people who seem to hate each other?

HOTNESS! HOTNESS! HOTNESS!

Lydia Carpenter is running for Mayor of Cooper Ridge. She loves this town and she wants to preserve its qualities but also to make it successful. She wants to win and help the people who have helped her after moving into town a few years back.

From the moment Lydia met Colton West, she knew she had to remain as far as possible from him. He was dating her ex-best friend Natalie and she's even a bridesmaid at their wedding. But, when said wedding doesn't happen and Colton is left at the altar, she can't seem to let him suffer. After too many drinks, the next morning she finds herself with a severe hangover in Las Vegas with a ring on her finger. Yes, she has married the guy she was supposed to stay away from. Annulling the wedding is not an option. The last thing she needs is this type of news to spread around town. Nonetheless, she's not sure she can survive moving in with Colton. She's attracted to him and as hard as she tries to fight her feelings for him, getting to know him only makes it harder.

“But I really don’t do things like this. I am not spontaneous. I am not irresponsible. I do not…sleep with men that I don’t like.”
He snorted. “I don’t usually sleep with women with superiority complexes.”

Colton has always done the responsible thing. When his twin left town without a glance back, he knew he had to step up and help his father with their family business. He has demonstrated he's good at it. He's also good at helping his sisters and mother who is fragile after learning her father had an affair and he has another sibling. He decides staying married is the best choice rather than upsetting his mother and fighting his attraction to Lydia is a lost battle. Convincing her that they might have a chance is harder than he thought. Good thing he can be stubborn.

“Next to him I look like a damn Care Bear.”
She pressed her hand to his stomach and pushed against his abs. “Aren’t you supposed to have some kind of rainbow light that shoots out of you or something?”
“I regret my choice of simile. Stop pressing on my stomach.”
“It pretty much doesn’t press. Your abs are crazy.”

I loved both characters. They made perfect sense. From the moment they met, they knew about their attraction. Their banter and fights had me laughing every single time. The epilogue was too sweet!

First Comes Love by Emily Giffin

Title: First Comes Love
Author: Emily Giffin
Release Date: June 28, 2016
Publisher: Ballantine Books - Random House Publishing Group

In this dazzling new novel, Emily Giffin, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Something Borrowed, Where We Belong, and The One & Only introduces a pair of sisters who find themselves at a crossroads.

Growing up, Josie and Meredith Garland shared a loving, if sometimes contentious relationship. Josie was impulsive, spirited, and outgoing; Meredith hardworking, thoughtful, and reserved. When tragedy strikes their family, their different responses to the event splinter their delicate bond.

Fifteen years later, Josie and Meredith are in their late thirties, following very different paths. Josie, a first-grade teacher, is single—and this close to swearing off dating for good. What she wants more than the right guy, however, is to become a mother—a feeling that is heightened when her ex-boyfriend’s daughter ends up in her class. Determined to have the future she’s always wanted, Josie decides to take matters into her own hands.

On the outside, Meredith is the model daughter with the perfect life. A successful attorney, she’s married to a wonderful man, and together they’re raising a beautiful four-year-old daughter. Yet lately, Meredith feels dissatisfied and restless, secretly wondering if she chose the life that was expected of her rather than the one she truly desired.

As the anniversary of their tragedy looms and painful secrets from the past begin to surface, Josie and Meredith must not only confront the issues that divide them but also come to terms with their own choices. In their journey toward understanding and forgiveness, both sisters discover they need each other more than they knew, and that in the recipe for true happiness, love always comes first.

Emotionally honest and utterly enthralling, First Comes Love is a story about family, friendship, and the courage to follow your own heart—wherever that may lead.

The story centers around one family who's destroyed after Daniel, their son and brother die. The father who's an alcoholic starts drinking again, leading to a divorce. Both sisters, who never had a close relationship suddenly are even more distant from each other.

Fast forward fifteen years and Josie who has always behaved like a free soul is worried about almost turning forty. She's tired of dating without finding the right man. Once, she fell in love but the relationship fell apart. Josie is a first-year teacher and her ex-boyfriend's daughter is soon to be part of her class. She dreads meeting him and his wife again but this interaction forces her to re-evaluate her life and she decides that she wants a child before it's too late. Just before this, her last date is with Pete, a physical therapist who seems to be really interested in her. Josie has always been able to count on her best friend Gabe who will help her narrow down a sperm donor.

Meredith is Daniel's other sister. She is married to Daniel's best friend. They started a relationship the morning after Daniel died. He was there for her and her parents, supporting them and helping spread the awful news.  Meredith is hiding how unhappy she is with her life. She wanted to be an actress and instead, she's a lawyer. The only thing good in her marriage is her daughter Harriett. She knows the death of Daniel is the only reason why her life turned out this way. She's getting tired of living this charade.

I felt saddened by these characters. Sometimes the death of a family member can make a family become closer but in this case, it was the opposite. The parents get divorced and the daughters' relationship becomes even more strained. At times, it felt like they hated each other. One was trying to put blame on the other one for past mistakes. If I had to choose, I would say I like Josie better. Yes, she was self-centered but at least she was trying to find her happiness. She was finally ready to move forward with her life while I felt like Meredith's was imploding hers.

I want to mention that I found her relationship with Gabe a bit odd. Not because of what he offers to do but because he was always described as morose. Why hang out with someone who can be that way? Although he was definitely someone Josie could count on.

Pete surprised me. I don't know that I would have behaved so rational with the whole ordeal...probably not.

I was in love with Nolan. He was a great dad and a great husband. He made me wish the book had an epilogue. I was hoping to get more of an insight into his future.

All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda

Title: All the Missing Girls
Author: Megan Miranda
Release Date: June 28, 2016
Publisher: Simon & Schuster

Like the spellbinding psychological suspense in The Girl on the Train and Luckiest Girl Alive, Megan Miranda’s novel is a nail-biting, breathtaking story about the disappearances of two young women—a decade apart—told in reverse.
It’s been ten years since Nicolette Farrell left her rural hometown after her best friend, Corinne, disappeared from Cooley Ridge without a trace. Back again to tie up loose ends and care for her ailing father, Nic is soon plunged into a shocking drama that reawakens Corinne’s case and breaks open old wounds long since stitched.

The decade-old investigation focused on Nic, her brother Daniel, boyfriend Tyler, and Corinne’s boyfriend Jackson. Since then, only Nic has left Cooley Ridge. Daniel and his wife, Laura, are expecting a baby; Jackson works at the town bar; and Tyler is dating Annaleise Carter, Nic’s younger neighbor and the group’s alibi the night Corinne disappeared. Then, within days of Nic’s return, Annaleise goes missing.

Told backwards—Day 15 to Day 1—from the time Annaleise goes missing, Nic works to unravel the truth about her younger neighbor’s disappearance, revealing shocking truths about her friends, her family, and what really happened to Corinne that night ten years ago.

Like nothing you’ve ever read before, All the Missing Girls delivers in all the right ways. With twists and turns that lead down dark alleys and dead ends, you may think you’re walking a familiar path, but then Megan Miranda turns it all upside down and inside out and leaves us wondering just how far we would be willing to go to protect those we love.

"Pick yourself up.
Start Over Again."

Lately, I'm in a thriller mood. I love romance but thrillers are a welcome change in between them.

All the Missing Girls surrounds the disappearance of Corinne Prescott, Nicolette Farrell's best friend. She disappeared ten years ago without a trace. Soon after, Nicolette leaves town and goes to college. She left her father, brother, and Tyler, the man she loved. Now, a decade later, she's a teacher and she's engaged to Everett, a successful lawyer. Her life is moving forward.

When her brother calls and informs her that they have to sell the family home and her father, who is in an assisted living facility, won't cooperate, she has no other choice than to drive back home to help out. She has two months to settle everything and return to her new life. The last thing she was expecting was for another young woman to disappear in Cooley Ridge.

I like the element of mystery surrounding the disappearance of both women. I was sure the events were connected and I was 90% sure of who was to blame. I just couldn't figure out why. Some of the twists took me by surprise and I welcomed them. The characters were all suspicious. Daniel, Tyler, Jackson and Bailey were all hiding things.

The way the book was narrated in reverse made me crazy. If I'm honest, I felt tempted to start from day 1 and read the days in order. I'm glad I didn't succumb to it.

There were some loose ends I wanted an answer for. I wanted to know who was in the woods smoking. Was it Jackson?  Or was it Nic just imagining it?

AMAZON | B&N

I’m now completely addicted to the Outlaw series by Elle Kennedy. The second novel in the series ADDICTED proves that Elle Kennedy is an imaginative storyteller and can create heart stopping, chemistry ridden stories that leave you turning the pages as quickly as you can.

After a deadly attack forces Lennox and his best friend Jamie to leave their home and relocate with Connor Mackenzie and his band of outlaws (which is described in greater detail in the first book, CLAIMED, so go read it :) ), everything between Lennox and Jamie has been unpredictable.

The two have been friends since childhood but have never made any indication that their relationship was anything but platonic. When they are sent to another compound to help with a situation there, their true feelings start becoming clear. They are both afraid to ruin their friendship, and loving someone in their world can only lead to heartache.

**
Pretend to give a s*** about you?” he spat out. “Guess what, honey? You’re all I care about.”

Her heartbeat accelerated.

“Every move I make is directly driven by my feelings for you.” His fingers tightening in her hair, his chest pressed right up against hers, a solid, immovable object. “When I make a decision, you think it’s my safety I take into consideration? It’s fu***** yours. I don’t take a g****** breath without considering how it would affect you.”

I read a lot… Several books a week, and I find myself in a deja vu sort of state. The stories I read are all fully entertaining but I feel they lack originality. That is not the case with Elle Kennedy’s Outlaw series. When I read ClAIMED last year I was fully enchanted by this wonderful new world that Elle Kennedy created. The erotic dystopian concept had me devouring every single written word.

I met Jamie and Lennox in CLAIMED and while they were only secondary characters Elle Kennedy’s writing had me hoping that they would soon get their own story. And let me tell you, their story does not disappoint. ADDICTED had the kicka**, complex characters that I grew to love. Jamie is a fierce, independent woman with a vulnerable side that makes her the perfect match for Lennox. And who wouldn’t love Lennox, a hot alpha with a temper that makes Jamie show her claws? I loved this book and I’m dying for the next installment. I hope all the characters get their own story, because there is a lot I need to know about everyone!

ADDICTED had me glued to its pages. If you’re looking for something that’s completely different from anything out there but still has super hot and steamy scenes, because come on, it’s still an erotic novel, pick up this series! I promise you won’t be disappointed.
