Sometimes it only takes a minute. A connection of eyes across a room, a quickened heartbeat, and everything changes.

I was a cocktail waitress with a fondness for partying and meaningless sex.
He owned half of Vegas and had the reputation to match.

I should have turned away. Instead, I stepped closer.

Then, the lies started.
Rumors spread.
Stalking commenced.
And someone died.

None of it stopped me from falling in love..

Royals (Royals #1)
by Rachel Hawkins

Hardcover, 256 pages
Expected publication: May 1st 2018 by Penguin Random House
ISBN: 1524738239

Meet Daisy Winters. She’s an offbeat sixteen-year-old Floridian with mermaid-red hair; a part time job at a bootleg Walmart, and a perfect older sister who’s nearly engaged to the Crown Prince of Scotland. Daisy has no desire to live in the spotlight, but relentless tabloid attention forces her to join Ellie at the relative seclusion of the castle across the pond.

While the dashing young Miles has been appointed to teach Daisy the ropes of being regal, the prince’s roguish younger brother kicks up scandal wherever he goes, and tries his best to take Daisy along for the ride. The crown–and the intriguing Miles–might be trying to make Daisy into a lady . . . but Daisy may just rewrite the royal rulebook to suit herself.

I am a SUCKER for romance novels involving royalty, so I was more than excited to get my hands on this book! I AM TRASH FOR ROYALTY AND I DON'T EVEN CARE HOW LAME THAT MIGHT SOUND!

Royals was a witty, charming, and romantic book. I was sucked in from the first page and never wanted the story to end.

I absolutely loved the royalty element of this story. The characters were thrown into so many fun situations due to royal expectations and royal outings in the town. There is just something so addicting about contemporary novels taking place in a castle with royals! This book was the perfect example of how charming and addictive books can be when royals are involved. I will admit the royal family and their heritage was a little confusing to understand in this book, but I didn't really care. I loved being in the beautiful setting of Scotland with an enchanting castle and swoony men.

The main character, Daisy, was such a fun main character. I loved how she wasn't afraid to be herself in the world of the high-class royals. Daisy always spoke her mind and stood up for herself and those she cared about. She was hilarious, loyal, and relatable. I really enjoyed being in her head and read about her trying to navigate the rocky road of royalty.

I also loved a lot of the side characters, especially Miles. EXCUSE ME WHILE I SWOON FOREVER! As soon as he was introduced as the grumpy and quiet guy, I knew I was going to love him. I loved seeing him open up throughout the story and start to soften up. HE WAS A PRECIOUS BABY THAT I MUST PROTECT AT ALL COSTS. Miles was a brooding, mysterious, romantic, smart, and charming guy. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO LOVE HIM. I WANT TO READ ABOUT MILES FOREVER, PLEASE?

This book was seriously ADDICTIVE. I read it all in one sitting because I just could not put it down.Royals was everything I ever wanted in a contemporary romance about royals AND more. If you are looking for a fun and romantic contemporary novel to escape reality, then I definitely recommend checking this book out.

I NEED THIS BOOK TO BE TURNED INTO A MOVIE ASAP!!! I am just going to continue to re-read this book so I don't die while waiting for the sequel.

Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne

Hardcover, 391 pages
Expected publication: May 1st 2018 by HMH Books for Young Readers
ISBN: 1328948935

Seventeen-year-old Stella Ainsley wants just one thing: to go somewhere—anywhere—else. Her home is a floundering spaceship that offers few prospects, having been orbiting an ice-encased Earth for two hundred years. When a private ship hires her as a governess, Stella jumps at the chance. The captain of the Rochester, nineteen-year-old Hugo Fairfax, is notorious throughout the fleet for being a moody recluse and a drunk. But with Stella he’s kind.

But the Rochester harbors secrets: Stella is certain someone is trying to kill Hugo, and the more she discovers, the more questions she has about his role in a conspiracy threatening the fleet.

As a huge fan of Jane Eyre, I was really excited to read a YA retelling of the story. So, I went into this book with high expectations, AND THIS BOOK EXCEEDS ALL OF THOSE EXPECTATIONS! I AM AN EMOTIONAL MESS! I WANT TO HUG THIS BOOK FOREVER!!!! THIS WAS A FREAKING ROLLER COASTER!!!

Okay, I let me get back to the actual review.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about this book was the way the author took Jane Eyre and put such a refreshing and interesting twist to it. Even though I could predict some of the things that were going to happen due to it being a retelling, I still was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Fans of Jane Eyre will appreciate the nods to the original story and the unique path the author took with this story. Even if you haven't read Jane Eyre, you can still appreciate the mesmerizing and addicting plot of this book.

Stella, the main character, was a delightful character. She was so relatable and felt incredibly realistic. Stella was smart, determined, loving, kind, thoughtful, loyal, and so unselfish. She was a girl who was very sweet, but she knew when to be fierce and put her foot down. Stella wasn't perfect by any means, but her flaws made her seem more human. I just really appreciated that the author showed that a girl could be kind and thoughtful, but also stand up for herself and others by using her voice. STELLA IS A CHARACTER THAT I LOVE WITH MY ENTIRE HEART. I WANT TO HUG HER, BE HER BEST FRIEND, AND BE HER.

Hugo was the main male character, and it is safe to say that he is my new book friend. Hugo had a difficult past and has gone through SO MUCH. He tried to hide his pain behind snarky remarks and humor, but deep down, he was such a precious and kind soul. Hugo was such a charming, witty, delightful, romantic, mysterious, loyal, and deep guy. I LOVED learning more about him throughout the story. HE IS A PRECIOUS CINNAMON ROLL THAT I WANT TO PROTECT AT ALL COSTS. I ALSO WANT TO MARRY HIM AND LOVE HIM FOREVER.

THE ROMANCE BETWEEN HUGO AND STELLA KILLED ME AND THEN BROUGHT ME BACK TO LIFE. At first, Hugo's persistence to make Stella spend time with him seemed a little odd, but I was glad that Hugo pushed Stella out of her comfort zone and forced her to get to know him. Those moments were some of my favorite moments of the book.

THEY ARE PERFECT TOGETHER AND ARE SOUL MATES, OKAY? I honestly could go on and on about how much I adored their relationship, but I am trying to wrap this review up. JUST KNOW THAT THE ROMANCE IS PERFECTLY PACED, FULL OF SWOONS, AND ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL.

Besides Hugo and Stella, there were a lot of interesting and lovable side characters. Each character was so unique and memorable! BASICALLY, I LOVED EVERY CHARACTER AND I DON'T EVEN CARE IF THAT SOUNDS CRAZY. Also, the author made sure that friendships and familial relationships were not tossed to the side because of the romance, THANK GOODNESS! Every relationship in this book was important and well developed.

Brightly Burning was a vivid and enchanting story that captivated me from the first line. This book explored family, loyalty, forgiveness, and romance in the most heart-wrenching way. If you are looking for a new book to get addicted to, then I definitely recommend checking this one out.

Hope couldn’t find it in herself to blink, focused on God’s gift to womankind. Her aunt’s invitation to dinner had come at the perfect time, giving Hope an excuse to avoid her mother’s weekly nagathon. Since her idiot older brothers had hooked up with the loves of their lives, her mother had deemed Hope fair game again. So much for their pleasant détente, where Hope stopped blaming her mother for her many issues and Linda Donnigan stopped getting on Hope for breathing wrong.
Yet Hope hadn’t anticipated seeing J.T. Webster. He hadn’t been at the last two dinners Aunt Sophie had invited her to. “Greg?” she asked, her mind on other things.
Like how incredible J.T. filled out a simple T-shirt and jeans. The man had the prettiest brown skin, like a smooth chocolate caramel. Light but so filling. She swallowed a sigh.
Liam was white, and she knew J.T.’s mom had been black. She also must have been gorgeous, because J.T. had his dad’s height and brawn, as well as the face of an angel who liked to sin. A lot.
She swallowed a sigh and continued to visually eat him up, wondering if the size of his hands and feet could be correlated to the size of other things.
God, get your mind off sex, Hope. His father is here! Aunt Sophie is here! And you’re off men, remember?
“Yeah, Greg,” J.T. said, looking concerned. “Gas Works Park ring a bell?”
Geez, she’d seen Greg and J.T. just last week. “Oh, no. No problems on that front.” To Liam, who studied her a little too intently, she explained, “Ex-boyfriend. A jerk I ran into. No biggie.” She shot J.T. a look, pleased when he kept quiet.
Last weekend, Greg, a guy she hadn’t dated or seen in over four months, had accused her of using her brother to bother him. But Hope hadn’t thought about Greg the Cheater since she’d dumped him, so she knew her brothers couldn’t care less about the guy. When Greg had tried to get a little gropey at the park, she’d taken him down, courtesy of the self-defense classes her brothers taught.
J.T. hadn’t had to do more than watch her take Greg out. She’d been so proud of herself… when she’d been able to tear her imagination from what J.T. would look like naked.
So sad those images replayed themselves over and over again.
“Right.” Liam stared from her to J.T., a question in his eyes.
“So who’s pregnant?” she asked, hoping to shift attention away from herself.
Rena squealed. “Del is! A tiny little bun in her McCauley oven.”
Del looked embarrassed, which was funny, because Del could out swear the mechanics she bossed around on a daily basis and took woman power to the next level. The woman had arms covered in tattoos, funky ash-blonde braids, and icy gray eyes that seemed to look through, and not at, a person.
Hope could see a faint resemblance from brother to sister despite their different skin tones. Both J.T. and Del had the same shape of their eyes and stubborn chins, just like their father. Only someone as obsessed with J.T. would have noticed that, she realized, and felt like a moron for being so enthralled with the man.
Fortunately, Liam and Rena started badgering Del for details, letting Hope off the hook.
Since she hadn’t yet greeted her aunt, Hope started to turn and found J.T. suddenly in her way. “Oh, sorry.”
He put a hand out to stop her from bumping into him. And sweet baby sexy, she felt the touch go from her arm all the way through her body, centering between her legs. Oy.

I want to start off this review by saying there are some trigger warning for abuse, attempted rape, and racism. One positive note about those subjects was that the author always showed the characters trying to overcome those dark moments, which brought some hope into those scenes. The author really focused on finding happiness no matter your skin color, size, where you were born, or how strong you are. It was empowering to see the characters try to overcome these issues and prove that everyone deserves to be treated the same and get their own happily ever after.

The beginning of this book was a little hard to get into because I couldn't quite understand what was happening. The book starts off diving right into this world, so it was a bit difficult for me to understand this new world that was presented. However, as the book went on, the author started to gradually introduce other elements of the world, which made it much easy to understand. By the end of this book, I found this new world to be vivid and imaginative. I am excited for book two, just because I am hoping there will be even more world building!

The plot of this book was fast-paced and held my interest the entire time. There was always something interesting going on and the characters were constantly faced with obstacles they needed to overcome. There never seemed to be a super slow moment in the story.

Throughout the book, there was strong sexual tension between the two main characters, which I was LIVING for. I definitely felt the physical and emotional chemistry between Jasminda and Jack! I thought they were a wonderful couple. Their romance was sweet, passionate, and full of swoons. However, there were times when it seemed like their romance took over the plot of the story when I would have preferred the story to continue to focus on the action or world-building. Again, that being said, I still enjoyed their romance as a whole and ended the book shipping them VERY hard.

Overall, this was an exciting and fast-paced novel full of romance, action, and lovable characters. I would recommend picking this book up if you are looking for a new romantic fantasy novel!

Out of Left Field by Kris Hui Lee

Kindle Edition, 1st edition, 320 pages
Expected publication: May 1st 2018 by Sourcebooks Fire

There’s no playing it safe in love or baseball in this sparkling debut, perfect for fans of Morgan Matson and Kasie West.

Marnie has never had a hard time fitting in with the guys. It would take a lot more than their goofy antics to keep her from joining them at the neighborhood sandlot to do what she loves best: play ball.

An added perk of hanging out at the sandlot? Spending time with Cody Kinski, their high school’s star pitcher and Marnie’s best friend. Sure, he can be stubborn and annoying. He also knows how to make her laugh and respects her skills on the mound. And when he gets nailed in the arm by a bone-fracturing pitch, Marnie becomes the team’s best chance at making it to the playoffs. Except no one told the guys they’re supposed to be on her side.

With her own team against her, Marnie begins questioning her abilities. And when fate throws her a curveball, can she play without losing the game, Cody, and her belief in herself?

Out of Left Field was a charming, lovable, and fun contemporary romance novel!

The main character, Marnie, was a strong and determined girl! There were so many times when people tried to tear her down, and she always stood up for herself. I loved how fierce she was and how she continued to show she was just as valuable and useful as any guy! Marnie's best friend, Sara, was such a supportive friend to Marnie. Their friendship was so positive and sweet, which warmed my heart. I was so happy that there was a strong female friendship represent throughout this book. It was refreshing to see two girls build each other up instead drag each other down.

Cody, the romantic interest, was another supportive and kind character. He was someone that always believed in Marnie and wanted to see her succeed. The romantic relationship between Cody and Marnie developed at a believable pace and they had sweet moments. However, I wish Cody would have been more present in the book. I felt like their relationship had a lot of "telling" instead of "showing". It was constantly discussed how much they cared for each other and how strong their relationship was, but I was hoping to actually see more of that. I still thought they had a cute romance, but I think it would have been even more impactful if they had more scenes that showed their relationship.

Overall, I found this to be a quick and romantic read about high school, baseball, and relationships. If you are looking for a summer romance novel, I would recommend checking this book out!

A Date with Darcy (Bookish Boyfriends #1)
by Tiffany Schmidt

Paperback, 400 pages
Expected publication: May 1st 2018 by Amulet Paperbacks
ISBN: 1419728601

In this contemporary YA, a teenager’s favorite literary heroes woo her in real life

The first of two books in an intended paperback original series about a girl whose classic literary crushes manifest in real life. Merrilee Campbell, 16, thinks boys are better in books, chivalry is dead, and there’d be nothing more romantic than having just one guy woo her like the heroes in classic stories. She’s about to get the chance to test these daydreams when she, her best friend, Eliza, and her younger sister, Rory, transfer into Reginald R. Hero High, where all their fantasies come true—often with surprising consequences.

Going into this book, I was hoping for a cute and fluffy contemporary novel, and that is exactly what I got! This book was as sweet as cotton candy, which was adorable and fun.

At first, I did have a hard time getting into this book because it was a bit slow and the characters felt SO young. I didn't care that the characters were younger than me, but this was a YA book where I could really feel how young the characters were. The dialogue in this book just had a young and childlike vibe to it, which made it hard for me to connect to at times. I definitely would recommend this book to younger readers as they would probably relate to the characters more than I did.

Even though the characters felt so much younger than me, I still really enjoyed them. Merilee was a book obsessed girl who fell in love with all the men in the books she read. Merilee was a girl who believed men in real life could not measure up to fictional men, and I have never agreed with a character more! I also loved how strong and determined Merilee was. She was never afraid to stand up for herself and take control of uncomfortable situations. I think she is a great role model for younger girls!

I found the romances in this book to be charming and precious! There was what felt like a case of insta-love, but I felt like it worked pretty well for this endearing and cute novel. The romance seemed like it really fit with the vibe of this book, so the romance did not bother me like I thought it would. There were plenty of adorable and swoony moments that had me smiling ear to ear throughout the book. I was really happy that this book also focused on other relationships besides romantic ones. This book explored the relationships between sisters and families, which was a heart-warming element of the story.

Overall, this was a quick and fun story. If you are a younger reader who wants a fun contemporary romance novel, then I would recommend checking this book out!
