Bring Her Home by David Bell

Title: Bring Her Home
Author: David Bell
Publisher: Berkley
Release Date: July 11, 2017

In the breathtaking new thriller from David Bell, bestselling author of Since She Went Away and Somebody I Used to Know, the fate of two missing teenage girls becomes a father’s worst nightmare....

Just a year and a half after the tragic death of his wife, Bill Price’s fifteen-year-old daughter, Summer, and her best friend, Haley, disappear. Days later, the girls are found in a city park. Haley is dead at the scene, while Summer is left beaten beyond recognition and clinging to life.

As Bill holds vigil over Summer’s bandaged body, the only sound the unconscious girl can make is one cryptic and chilling word: No. And the more time Bill spends with Summer, the more he wonders what happened to her. Or if the injured girl in the hospital bed is really his daughter at all.

When troubling new questions about Summer’s life surface, Bill is not prepared for the aftershocks. He’ll soon discover that both the living and the dead have secrets. And that searching for the truth will tear open old wounds that pierce straight to the heart of his family...

"She's home"

This is my first book by David Bell. After seeing the beautiful cover and reading the blurb, I couldn't wait to request it.

Bring Her Home is narrated through the eyes of Bill Price, a broken-hearted father after his teenage daughter Summer goes missing. He's devastated especially since just over a year ago he lost his wife in an accident. Neither Summer nor Bill has processed their loss well and they are still grieving. Before Summer's disappearance, her relationship with Bill had been difficult. Summer has begun testing her boundaries and questioning Bill's authority repeatedly.

Summer and her friend Haley are found at the park two days later. Haley is dead and Summer has been beaten to within an inch of her life. Bill leaves everything behind to stay at the hospital with his daughter. Bill's sister Paige comes to stay with him and give him the support he needs. The police have no good leads but Bill believes Summer is still in danger and he will do anything to protect her.

And here is where I stop....It's hard to say more without giving the plot away. I can say that it has two good twists I enjoyed.

Now, to the main issue I had with the story. My main problem was with Bill. I liked him for the most part. I could feel his desperation to help Summer in any way he could. However, he also made several hasty decisions and if anyone needed anger management counseling ASAP, it was him. Anything made him explode. His behavior was irrational. I'm not saying that his grief and pain was not affecting his judgment but some of the situations he placed himself in were just dumb. I'm surprised Detective Hawkins, didn't throw him in jail multiple times.

Overall, Bring Her Home had a suspenseful narrative that kept me guessing of what was to come until the end.

Cliffhanger: No

The Books

 #1: TORN by Eleanor Green

“Be care how you look at me sweetheart, you’re putting some wicked thoughts in my mind.” When Katie Harrington becomes engaged to Branson Stone she believes her life is right on track for all her dreams to come true. However, flashes of a life she never lived haunt her—leading her to discover a past that has been purposely erased from her memory in order to protect her from horrible truths. The look on her fiancĂ©’s face as she retells everything she remembers will forever be etched in her mind. Instead of catching and comforting her, he lets her go. Retreating to the family’s cottage on the Outer Banks for the summer, Katie’s heart begins to heal. She succumbs to the allure of a dangerously handsome local, Aidan Romero. But as soon as Katie begins to let go and move on with Aidan . . . Branson finds her. Now Katie is torn between two lives—facing her painful past with Branson, or moving on with Aidan and keeping the secrets safely buried forever.

#2: COLLABORATION by Nevaeh Lee and Michelle Lynn

“Now that little Southern Belle I just met…well, that’s a totally different story. I could feel the innocence just pouring off that one, and damn if I didn’t want to be the man to make a woman out of her.” This is not your typical rock star romance. For one, the “rock star” is a rapper. And not just any rapper. Trace is the hottest ticket in the music industry right now, regardless of which definition of ‘hot’ you choose. Taryn Starr is not the girl-next-door who unknowingly meets a celebrity. Known as “America’s Sweetheart,” the reigning country music princess and world-renowned superstar knows exactly who Trace is…or does she? Their worlds collide when the musicians whose paths were never destined to cross are forced by their joint record label to collaborate on a song. The sparks fly and ignite a fire that blazes hotter with every minute they spend together—for better or worse. One thing’s for certain, the two media magnets can’t deny their explosive chemistry, but will life in the spotlight ultimately bring Trace and Taryn together or force them apart?

  #3: EVERSEA by Natasha Boyd

“It’s amazing,” he repeated, “that you seem to have no idea how fucking beautiful you are.” When his co-star and real-life girlfriend is caught cheating on him by the tabloids, A-list hottie, Jack Eversea, finds himself in sleepy Butler Cove, South Carolina. Jack hopes the sultry southern heat in this tiny coastal Lowcountry town will hide him not only from the tabloids and his cheating girlfriend, but his increasingly vapid life and the people who run it. He doesn’t count on meeting Keri Ann Butler. Keri Ann has relied on herself so long, dealing with her family’s death and the responsibilities of keeping up her family’s historic mansion, that boys and certainly the meager offering of eligible boys in Butler Cove, have never figured into her equation. But fate has other plans. Suddenly face to face with the man who played the movie role of her favorite fictional character, Jack has Keri Ann yearning for everything she has previously avoided … and Jack must decide whether this funny, sassy girl is worth changing his life for, before his mistakes catch up to him.

#4: HE BELONGS WITH ME by Sarah Darlington

“I like you. I more than like you. As hard as I try, I can’t seem to stop and I sure as hell don’t want to try anymore.” Two girls. One Leo. Identical twins, Maggie and Clara Ryder, both grew up with Leo Maddox, billionaire playboy, apparent alcoholic, and heir to his grandfather’s world-famous Maddox hotel empire. Their roles were cemented long ago: Maggie, as his best friend and Clara as his childhood nemesis. But when a simple twist of fate changes everything and both girls start to fall for the lean, mean, ridiculously sexy and seemingly spoiled Leo… which girl will win his heart? Throw in a little mischief, drama, and one smoking-hot bartender and lines are sure to blur. But one thing’s for certain, neither good-girl Maggie nor rebellious Clara will be satisfied until they each figure out where they belong.

#5: RUMOR HAS IT by Elisabeth Grace

“Rumor Has It is quite possibly one of the best New Adult debuts I’ve read–ever. I loved every hip-hop minute of it and can’t wait to read the rest of the series! I devoured it, from laugh out loud funny moments to hot Mason scenes, I was begging for more by the time I finished reading.”–Rachel Van Dyken, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author All publicity is good publicity, right? Unless you’re recent college grad Ellie Wagner and an embarrassing video of you and your boyfriend goes viral. Every man in your life abandons you, but who knew a one-minute clip of your latest doomed relationship would brand you a slut, prevent you from getting your perfect job, and force you to keep doing the one thing you swore you’d never do again…live with your mother. But staying with mom and her latest boy-toy (is this husband number four or five?) until your life turns around might not be all bad. Especially when you fall – literally – at the feet of a sexy, green-eyed stranger who offers you freedom and a life of luxury on a gold-rimmed platter. There’s only one little problem – the man of your dreams is none other than Mason Nash, the latest hip-hop star busting up the music charts. Fame and fortune are his calling cards and he’s vying to steal the show on a new reality TV series that will catapult him into mainstream stardom. Hello spotlight.
The man behind the famous persona is perfect for Ellie in every way, but can she overcome the ugly pitfalls that come with Mason’s celebrity status? Or will she be forced to choose between the man she loves and the independent life she longs for? After all, fame and fortune aren’t always what they seem and not all publicity is good publicity…

#6: AT ANY PRICE by Brenna Aubrey

“Everything was spinning around me and I-I was spinning too, delirious with want. Like a woman drowning in the middle of a stormy sea, in desperate need of a life raft. That sea was Adam Drake and he was pulling me adrift, stranding me in some strange and forgotten land.”

Achievement Unlocked: Geek Virgin When Mia Strong, proud geek-girl and popular gaming blogger, auctions off her virginity online, she knows she’ll make waves. But what she will not be making is a love connection. Her rules are set in stone: One night. No further contact.

It’s a desperate step, but it’s the only way she can go to medical school and pay her mother’s mounting hospital bills. Difficulty Level: Millionaire CEO Adam Drake, the enigmatic auction winner, is a software prodigy who made his first million at seventeen. Now, in his mid-twenties, he’s sexy, driven and–as CEO of his own gaming company–he’s used to making the rules. Before Mia knows what’s happening, he’s found the loophole in the rules of her auction. Every stipulation she’s made to protect her heart gets tossed by the wayside. She can’t tell if he’s playing her…or if he’s playing for keeps.

#7: BACK TO LIFE by Danielle Allen

“Before you, I just existed. I didn’t really live. I didn’t really feel. I was going through the motions. And then I met you…” I stroked his face and gazed up at him. “And you brought me back to life.” Sahara Lee has spent the last ten years living with the guilt of a tragic accident and its aftermath. That night irrevocably changed the outgoing, fun-loving college freshman into an introverted, workaholic with no social life. Sahara isolates herself from everyone and everything that reminds her of home in an effort to forget what happened. Using art as a substitute for love, Sahara throws herself into music and art as a way to feel something other than the guilt that haunts her. She accepts her lonely existence as penance for the role she played in the accident. That is, until she meets Tyree Barker, the good looking entrepreneur with baggage of his own. Blindsided by a legal loophole, Sahara is suddenly forced to confront the past she’s been running from. Juggling the guilty feelings of her past and the unexpected feelings of her present, Sahara’s future becomes complicated as she heads down a path of forgiveness, love, and heartbreak…and not in that particular order. Back to Life reminds you that living and existing are two completely different ways to go through life. Grief will break you but guilt, guilt will destroy you. And once that happens, what can bring you back to life?

#8: THE HIDDEN by Kelley R. Martin

“She was like quick-sand–the more I struggled to get out, the more I sank. So I’d decided to give up and embrace the sink down.” On her first day of college, Emily meets a walking, talking god. With a gorgeous face, killer blue eyes, and a body to die for, it’s easy to see why Thomas Paige is the envy of every guy at Potomac Ridge University and why every girl within a fifty mile radius wants to get a piece of him. Sounds great, right? Well, it would be if Emily didn’t think he was such an ass. Since she’s not interested in becoming another notch on his bedpost, she tells him to shove it, and convinces herself that her novel use of the word “no” is what’s got him hounding her all over campus. But there are two sides to every story, and Thomas is determined to make Emily hear his. Even if it does sound crazy and impossible.

#9: DON’T LET GO by Michelle Lynn

“I won’t give up. If you’re not going to fight for this…I’ll do it for the both of us.” Sadie Miller is attempting to change her ways and hide somewhere no one knows her former self. She only wants to finish her final year of college, obtain her degree, and get out from the hold of her affluent parents. Then she meets Brady Carsen, the lead singer of The Invisibles, a popular local band in the college town. She tries to stay away but quickly realizes that, although he might not be what she’s used to, he’s exactly what she needs and more importantly, everything she could possibly want. Unfortunately, Sadie’s troubled past left her with insecurities that make her question Brady’s true intentions. And while Brady is convinced that Sadie is the one for him, he has his own secrets that he fears will be their undoing. If they want to be together, they will have to stand united and fight the outside influences that are threatening to tear them apart. Can they put their pasts behind them for good in order to secure their future?

#10: THE PERFECT EMOTION (Book 2 of the Perfect Series) by Melissa Rolka

“I’ve been waiting for you,” he whispers. “I never asked you to,” I say with little conviction. “And yet, here I am.” I slowly turn myself into him and bury my face in his chest. Even through his coat I can smell that familiar pine and masculine scent. The story of Kate, Kyle and Reed continues in this second novel of The Perfect Series. Kate (Katherine) Monroe is finally coming to heads with the decisions she’s made in the past to keep herself distracted at any cost. Learning to move on and forward with the conflicts in her life is harder than she expects though. With Kyle continuing to attempt reconciliation and Kate’s mom back at home, avoiding and running are no longer an option. All along Kate’s mind and heart are consumed with Reed, but she fights to push her feelings and desires to the side. Despite the obvious pull and connection she has with Reed she finds it difficult to let him in… and trust in herself. However, Reed’s perseverance and patience never wavers and eventually he uses the one thing that had always brought them together… tennis. As Reed and Kate begin to embark on a new relationship they face the past and the present head on. Along the way, new challenges and emotions arise testing the direction of their future together. Can Kate forgive herself and trust Reed in order to latch onto the one emotion she needs most… love?

Finding Us by Megan Smith

Finding Us
Jasmine Jennings is living in NYC with her best friend Summer. She cut ties with her parents once she finished college and is able to have a good life because she was able to get her trust fund from her grandfather at age 22.

Her parents are rich and always pushed her to do what they want her to do.  The only love she received was from her nanny Marie.

Jasmine loves to dance and she does this as her job and  a relaxation technique.

Her friend Summer is dating a guy named Rex Mitchell. They get along well and when she meets his brother Knox Mitchell she knows she is in trouble. She tries to stay away from him but he keeps on finding her.

Knox Mitchell is all about revenge. He doesn't care that he is attracted to Jasmine or does he?  The more he knows her the more he likes her.

Secrets. They never stay hidden for too long and these could break them apart.

I read this book in an afternoon. It was an easy read.
I enjoyed most of it. I do believe that the ending was too rushed for me. I liked both characters although I wanted to scream at Knox sometimes. I liked the friends dynamic too and I want to read their stories as a well. I know Jeremy is next.

“I’m still trying to find my way out of this nightmare I’ve been living in.” Knox sighs deeply. “I’m still trying to find my way in life.”
I place a finger under Knox’s chin and tilt his head up. What I see in his eyes is like a mirror of my own. “We’re both lost. We’re trying to find our way and we’re working on finding us.”
Knox’s breath hitches before he crashes his mouth to mine. “We’re finding us.”

~ The Summer Series ~

Ringer is Book #4 in C.J’s mature young adult SUMMER SERIES, a series filled with intoxicatingly sweet romances and addictive, swoon worthy characters. The Summer Series is set in Onslow and it is here where you will meet the ruggedly handsome Onslow Boys - a group of men SO HOT in appearance and so likable in personality that’ll leave you craving MORE. Now imagine that, set it against a sizzling hot Australian background, fill it with good old Australian humor and there you have the Summer Series!

~ ML's Review ~
The novella begins with Ringer tired of all the "love is in the air" relationships around him. He is in need of a change in venue ASAP.

"Yeah, Onslow was beautiful; it was also bathed in romance. Sweet doe-eyed looks, hand holding, giggles, freakin’ sunshine and rainbows. It was enough to make your beer go flat."

When he finds out he can help his friend Max, he decides to leave Onslow and drive to Ballan and to Max's dad's property to help around.
To his surprise, the daughter of his temporary boss is acting like a spoiled brat and Ringer is not going to let her win this little war they have going on.

However, the more time he spends with her, the more he likes her even against his own will.

Miranda Henry is forced to go back home. Leaving Paris and going back to Australia is not what she wants. To makes matters worse, the new hired help keeps on making her do crazy things.  One minute she wants to hit him and the next she wants to kiss him -- hard.

Oh my, Ringer, you were so good in this book. You are my new favorite Onslow boy (I'm sure I'll change my mind when I read Adam's book).

I do think you deserved a full novel, but I guess I will have to conform with what I got. Sigh!

I like how CJ handles the humor. I do believe the last chapter was so funny and I liked how it ends too. I do hope we see more of them in Adam's book.  The only thing I will change about Ringer will be his smoking. Please quit, Ringer.

“Any girl who could nearly run me over, flip me off, tell me to eff off, drench me in cold water, stomp on my foot, push me in a dam, rip my favourite jeans, make me carry her handbag, attack me in my sleep, force me to hide under a car … and yet, still manages to make me fall in love with her?”

That One Summer (Summer #3) by C.J. Duggan Blog Tour

Release Date: December 16, 2013

Synopsis
Loving Chris Henderson would be wrong. Diabolically disastrous. I mean, what is there about him to love? He’s moody, bossy, brooding, a control freak, and that’s on a good day … but there was one achingly obvious fact that haunted my every thought, every minute of every day …

He sure could kiss.

As the countdown to the new millennium begins, there is one thing everyone agrees on: no one wants to be in Onslow for New Year’s Eve.

So that can only mean one thing: road trip!

No longer the mousey, invisible, shy girl from years ago, Tammy Maskala is finally making up for all those lost summers. A new year with new friends, which astoundingly includes the bossy boy behind the bar, Chris Henderson.

She likes her new friends (at least most of them), so why does she secretly feel so out of place?

After chickening out on the trip, a last-minute change of heart sees Tammy racing to the Onslow Hotel, fearing she’s missed her chance for a ride. The last thing she expected to meet was a less-than-happy Onslow Boy leaning against his black panel van.

Now the countdown begins to reach the others at Point Shank before the party is over and the new year has begun. Alone in a car with only the infuriating Chris Henderson, Tammy can’t help but feel this is a disastrous start to what could have been a great adventure. But when the awkward road trip takes an unexpected turn, Tammy soon discovers that the way her traitorous heart feels about Chris is the biggest disaster of all.

Fogged up windows, moonlight swimming, bad karaoke and unearthed secrets; after this one summer nothing will ever be the same again.

Excerpt

Chris leaned forward to lower the music, but it was too late now; there was a ringing in my ears.
He had nice hands, tanned by the sun, tidy fingernails; he could totally be a hand model with hands like those. If you were going to notice Chris and like him, his hands would probably be the first thing that would draw you to him, seeing as his face was always an intimidating scowl. It wasn’t the first time I had noticed his hands – there had been countless times he had served me a drink at the bar, or handed me change and I had noticed how nice they were. The second thing I noticed about Chris (if I was noticing things) was his shoulders. They were so square, so symmetrical; he looked like he was a swimmer. He had great posture, even when he stood behind the bar between customers, with his arms folded – his stance was straight, proud, expectant. Yep! Your eyes would trail from those hands to those shoulders and usually be met with a piercing flick of the deep brown eyes that would cause you to quickly look away, or caused me to, anyway.
He had been pretty intimidating in the beginning, but as time wore on I just found him downright rude, no matter how lovely his hands and shoulders may be.
“What are you staring at?” Chris’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts.
Oh crap! Was I staring?
I snapped my head away to look out of the window. “Nothing.”
“They’re not that white, are they?” he said.
My attention moved from the window to Chris again with a confused frown.
“Sorry?”
His head tilted downward as he shifted his leg a little to expose … a kneecap.
I smiled. “You’re wearing shorts?”
“You don’t have to sound so surprised.” He lowered his leg.
“I don’t think I’ve seen you in shorts before.” My eyes trailed over his tan cargos; it seemed that in line with nice hands and shoulders, Chris had nice legs. Okay, best not to stare, I thought. But then something grabbed my attention.
“You have impressively tanned legs for someone who lives in Levi’s,” I mused. “You don’t sun-bake in a pair of budgie smugglers on the weekends, do you?” That would just be too much.
Chris burst out laughing, so loud and abruptly it caused me to flinch at the unexpectedness of it. Laughter from Chris was as rare as seeing him in shorts.
“Budgie smugglers?” he asked.
“Yeah, you know, Speedos, Y-fronts,”
“I know what they are, Tammy, and the answer is no, no I don’t do that.” He grinned, concentrating on the road.
I took a moment to study Chris, not out of the corner of my eye this time but to unapologetically study him. I wanted to fully absorb the rarity of his smile, of his good humour, because let’s face it, it would probably be the first and last time I saw it.
I curved my brow. “So exceptionally tanned legs but no weekends spent in budgie smugglers, eh? Curiouser and curiouser,” I smirked.
Chris coughed. His face flexed back into those familiar stern lines as he straightened in his seat. “Tamara?”
I cocked my head. “Yes, Christopher?”

His lips twitched as he fought not to smile. “Stop staring at me.”

That One Summer (Summer #3) by C.J. Duggan

That One Summer
ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review.

This is another Osnlow Boy romance.

We all know about Chris Henderson. He is the one that behave as an adult since the first Summer book.  He is the responsible one. He also likes to be in charge.
Tammy Maskala is Amy's best friend. Now, that she is back in Onslow she is invited to every outing the gang does.

"Okay, so I didn’t know what to say to that exactly. It wasn’t every night of my life that I found myself pressed up intimately against an Onslow Boy, in the dark, in his bedroom, in his bed. Well, okay … under his bed. Still, it did make for interesting conversation."

She gets included in every game, every drinking night but she doesn't feel like part of the group. She is an outsider of sorts.
All of them will be leaving Onslow to spend New Year's some where else. At first she decides she doesn't want to go but she has a change of heart. By the time she gets to the hotel her friends are gone. Well, not all of them. Chris stayed behind to take her.  Tammy can't believe what's happening. Soon she finds herself falling for him during this road trip.  All preconceptions disappear in the van.

I believe Chris is my favorite Onslow boy.  I like that he is broody, and that he is the serious one. He also is the one who has melted my heart with the beautiful things he told Tammy.

“Because if I’d had to choose perfect, I would have just chosen you.”

“I would choose your legs even when they’re jigging and driving me to distraction. I’d choose your face because it creases into something so amazing when you find something funny (which, incidentally, isn’t often enough for my liking).
“I’d choose the way your cheeks go red whenever you’re embarrassed, just like they are now.
“I’d choose the fact that you’re smart, kind and funny and you don’t even know it.” His eyes ticked over my face in a long, silent study. “It’s a pretty big list, but yeah. I’d choose everything about you.”

Tammy was insecure and I'm sure that she has reasons for being that way, but Chris told her how he felt with actions and a word or two.

“You know that nice for me means ‘absolutely beautiful’, right?”

I'm really in love with Chris.  I love the Summer series.
Next is Adam and Ellie.  I wonder if the kiss will come into play in the next book.

"I was barely able to gather my thoughts as Chris pressed me against the back of the door and claimed my mouth in a hot, mind-bending kiss. His lips were demanding, firm, slow, coaxing mine to open for him. I was unable to move, enticingly ensnared by him as his scorching kiss robbed me of all thought, all breath."

An Endless Summer (Summer #2) by C.J. Duggan

An Endless Summer
Amy Henderson is the teenager daughter of the Onslow Hotel's owner.  We met her in The Boys of Summer, she was a feisty girl. Now, she has grown up and she is coming back after three years of exile ordered by her parents after she almost drowned.
When she gets to the Hotel she can't believe her eyes. Things are falling apart and the person taking care of the establishment is not trust worthy.  She makes a decision. She will make the Onslow Hotel a success again. Amy doesn't hesitate and throws herself into fixing the place. She knows she won't be able to do it by herself, unwillingly and with reservation she accepts the help of Sean Murphy.

Sean has been away too. His business is thriving but he misses the simple life he had during summers at the Onslow Hotel.  He decides that this is home for him and once he sees Amy something pulls him towards her.
Little by little, the rest of the crew starts popping in and lending a hand.
There is just one problem. Can Amy convince her parents to keep the Onslow Hotel?

The Onslow boys have become like family. I love their stories. I will read every single book about them.  We get the gang back together and it was nice to see how Toby and Tess were doing.
My only complaint would be that I thought it took too long for Amy to realize she was in love with Sean. She kept on pushing him away. Didn't she realize Sean is awesome??  Furthermore, I loved Sean in The Boys of Summer. He is funny, loyal and he is HOT. Another great read.  Thanks C.J. for writing about the Boys.

“Come on Amy, I saved you once, I’ll save you again.” I met his stare unflinchingly.
“I don’t need saving.”
A wicked grin formed slowly. “Don’t you?”
