“So, about why you came…”
“I came to say a goodbye, of sorts.”
Her heart stuttered, but hopefully she managed to keep her face blank. “Goodbye?”
“That’s right. I’m not coming back next semester.”
“You’ve taken another teaching job?”
“No,” he said, slipping his hands in his pockets. “Teaching has been wonderful, but I always planned to return to Whitcomb Enterprises in Los Angeles. My father will be retiring soon. Plus, the company’s expanding into airplane parts manufacturing plants and my environmental science expertise is going to be critical in that expansion.”
“I see,” she said, looking down at her hands, folded on her desk. “So, when are you leaving?”
“I leave tomorrow in order to start the ball rolling, but I won’t officially be in the swing of things for a few weeks.”
He left tomorrow.
She hadn’t seen him much since they’d broken up. Only here and there. And she’d been so angry before. It had only been a few weeks since they’d been able to be civil to one another again. Now he’d be gone from her life. Forever?
She was more shaken by the news than she wanted to admit.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
She swallowed, forcing a shrug. “Of course. I wish you well, Jamie.”
“I may be leaving the university, but we’ve still got Vegas.”
“Of course.”
“I’m attending a bachelor party while I’m there—one of my college friends is marrying my sister—and then I’ll be at the wedding.”
“That’s right. Brianne. And Eric?”
His jaw clenched. “That’s right.”
“So the wedding is in L.A.?”
“Coronado Island.”
The well-to-do place where he grew up. Lucy had been there once. It was a beautiful beach resort town that managed to seem casual even as it reeked of old money.
“Yes, well…I’m sure it’ll be a grand affair.” She rose from her seated position behind the desk, and to prove to him and to herself how over him she was, she came around to where he was and reached out to give him a hug. “See you in Vegas.”
He wrapped his arms around her waist.
His shoulders were as strong and broad and taut as she remembered them. His scent as woodsy. His breath as soft on her neck as he held her tight, returning the embrace. Tingles shot through her stomach. God, what this man could do to her. Sexual chemistry had never been their problem.
A little overwhelmed by being in bodily contact with a man her body still seemed to desire, she pulled back, intent on ending the hug. But when she tried to pull away, Jamie kept his arms around her waist.
“Do you need something else?” she asked, now eye-to-eye with him.
“Yes.”
For a moment, time hung suspended, and it seemed as though Lucy could see every fleck of gold in Jamie’s eyes, could feel every pound of his heartbeat, could breathe in the essence of him…and then he cupped her face and kissed her, even as he wound the hair at the sides of her face up in his fingers and tugged. Lucy felt herself melt into him and a moan escaped her lips. As they parted of their own free will, he slipped his tongue inside her mouth and sought hers out.
God, it was so good to kiss him. To have him touch her again. Lucy could hardly breathe. She was dizzy and she felt like she might very well black out.
She opened her eyes and he was staring into hers with an intense smoldering look that made her want to take him right there on the desk. Instead, she forced herself to take a step back.
“Bye, Luce. Take care of yourself, okay?”

“You, too,” she said simply. Because what else was there to say?

“What the hell, Grace? Why are you running from me?”
She gulped. The feel of his hands gripping her arms—gently, but firmly—made her shiver. She pasted a smile on her face. “Oh, hi Max. I’m not running, Sugar. It was just time for me to leave.”
He let her go and crossed his arms over his chest. “Uh-huh. And you didn’t hear me calling you?”
“You called me?” she asked, eyes wide, her tone obviously forced. Lord, she was such a horrible liar.
Slower than molasses going uphill in January, his gaze traveled down her body, taking in her outfit. A rose-colored halter, black skinny jeans and heels. Definitely club worthy and sexier than anything he’d ever seen her wear. When his eyes finally met hers again, she couldn’t help but gasp.
His expression was hot. Scorching. And unless she was mistaken, he looked like he wanted, really needed, what the brunette had said he was very good at providing. Fast and furious sex with a woman all night long. Sex with her.
Before she could stop herself, her gaze traveled to the front of his pants where sure enough…
The evidence of his obvious desire ignited her own.
She’d come here for a reason and now she had her opening.
The question was whether she was going to reach out and take it.
The answer was a resounding no.
She couldn’t.
Couldn’t endure being in Max’s arms only to have him witness her inability to do what so many other women seemed to do so easily. Besides, although he’d checked her out and seemed to like what he saw, it was probably just reflex. She was dressed up. He was on the prowl. More importantly, she’d actually been running from him. His hunter instincts had kicked in was all.
She started to back away. “I’m sorry, Max, but I have to go. It was good seeing you again.”
“Damn it, wait.”
At the commanding tone in his voice, she instinctively stopped. She held her breath as he walked toward her. That breath whooshed out of her lungs when Max lifted a hand and cupped the side of her neck. She gasped at how delicious his touch felt, how it was both tender and inescapable, and his eyes darkened to a deep burnished jade.
“What’s going on, baby? Why are you here?”
The way he stared at her, intense and deep, coupled with the way he called her baby, almost made her knees buckle. They certainly quivered, as did that tender spot between her legs. Heat washed over her then exploded when he skimmed his thumb across the line of her jaw. The way he was looking at her… as if he saw something in her that others didn’t, as if he liked what he saw and wanted to spend some time exploring it and hoped that’s what she wanted too… made a foolish hope start to bloom.
“Grace,” he said. “Answer me.”
“I—” She licked her lips, noting how his gaze dropped to her mouth as she did so. “I came to ask you…”
When she paused again, he leaned closer, until she could feel his breaths on her mouth, like tender air kisses teasing her with all that could come next. “Grace, I know you’re having a problem with something. You don’t know me well, but I think you know I’ll help you if I can. So tell me. What did you come to ask me?”
She took a deep breath and wondered if she was really going to say it, right here on the street. But the way he was looking at her, the way he was touching her… she wanted more of that. She wanted it too much.
Her gaze flitted away from his. “Max, I can’t…”
He raised his other hand so he was cupping both sides of her neck now. It made her feel boxed in. Trapped.
And she never wanted him to let her go.
Instinctively, she gripped both his wrists.
“Grace. What did you want to ask me?”
“You’re being far too bold, Max. I’m not going to—”
“What did you want to ask me, Grace?”
“Will you please stop—”
“Dammit, just tell me.”
“I want you to give me an orgasm!”
They both gasped.
Oh God, she’d actually blurted it out.

Good Lord, Grace thought. I’m in a parked car with Max Dalton. And he told me he needs me. He wants me to give up control so he can give me a big O. So why am I sitting here pressed against the passenger door? And why isn’t he reaching over the center console and touching me?
Max, who’d just pulled his car into a lookout point with a stunning view of the Las Vegas Strip, turned toward her. “Locals call this place Love with a View. I’ve never actually been up here but I’ve meaning to check it out.”
She gazed at the twinkling lights and far-off desert scape.
“It’s pretty,” she said. She tried to relax and started with unfolding her hands from her lap. Her palms were sweaty but she resisted wiping them on her skirt.
She wasn’t sure how he planned on starting to steam up the windows, but when he asked, “So, what were you like in college?” she blinked in surprise.
“You really want to talk about that?”
“It’s a good place to start.”
“Start what?”
“Start talking, Grace,” he said gently.
“I thought you wanted to make out and steam up some windows.”
“We’ll work our way up to that. You said you had your first sexual experience with your college boyfriend. What was his name?”
Grace just stared at Max, not sure why they were working their way up to anything. And really not sure why working their way up meant telling Max her ex-boyfriend’s name.
She shifted uncomfortably in her seat. “He’s really not relevant.”
“So humor me.”
“His name was Neil.”
“And you said Neil was a good lover. That you enjoyed sex with him for… two years, wasn’t it?”
“A little less than that considering we went out six months before we actually had sex, but that’s about right, yes.”
“Since you waited until college, waited six months with Neil, sex is meaningful to you. Did you wait for religious reasons?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
She shrugged. “I didn’t want to give myself to just anyone.”
He nodded, his eyes darkening, and she wondered what he was thinking. She was obviously willing to give herself to him. “Before that, before you had a boyfriend, did you experiment with sex? Make out in high school?”
“Not really,” she said.
“Did you masturbate?”
She felt her face getting warm but tried to appear composed. “Sure.”
“You never had any problem getting off by yourself and that’s still true?”
“Yes, it’s still true. But I’ve got to tell you, Max. This is starting to feel like a routine doctor’s appointment. And I’m not turned on at all. I—”
She gasped when Max reached over, put his hand on her thigh and leaned in close. “Concentrate, Grace. Because I’m betting if I put my hand down your panties right now, you’d be wet. Shall I find out?”
She swallowed hard, concentrated and realized he was right. She’d been in her head, focusing on the seeming mundane questions he was asking her, but her body was obviously going where Max wanted. She was wet. She actually ached. But that didn’t mean she wanted to talk about sex with him.
Listening to him say sexy things to her, fine.
But her? While she could surprise people with her sexuality and her piercings and her other secrets, one thing she’d never been good at was talking about sex. The only thing that mattered during sex was action, whether she could make a guy feel good and whether he could do the same for her.
She covered his hand with her own. “Max—”
“I was going to spend a little more time exploring your sexual history, but I certainly don’t want this encounter to seem clinical. So let’s change the subject. What gets you off?”
She tried to move back, but he caught her hand. “Why do we have to talk about mechanics?”
Without preamble, he slipped his free hand into the crease between her thighs. His hand didn’t get far between her closed legs, but it got far enough. “Because talking about sex gets you hot.”
