Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus

Title: Two Can Keep a Secret
Author: Karen M. McManus
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Release date: January 8th 2019

Echo Ridge is small-town America. Ellery's never been there, but she's heard all about it. Her aunt went missing there at age seventeen. And only five years ago, a homecoming queen put the town on the map when she was killed. Now Ellery has to move there to live with a grandmother she barely knows.

The town is picture-perfect, but it's hiding secrets. And before school even begins for Ellery, someone's declared open season on homecoming, promising to make it as dangerous as it was five years ago. Then, almost as if to prove it, another girl goes missing.

Ellery knows all about secrets. Her mother has them; her grandmother does too. And the longer she's in Echo Ridge, the clearer it becomes that everyone there is hiding something. The thing is, secrets are dangerous--and most people aren't good at keeping them. Which is why in Echo Ridge, it's safest to keep your secrets to yourself.

One of Us is Lying was one of my favorite books from 2017. It was a no-brainer to buy Two Can Keep a Secret as soon as I got the chance.

I've been in a huge reading slump and Two Can Keep a Secret was able to pull me out of it for which I'm very grateful for.

Echo Ridge is a town full of secrets and known for the disappearance of two beautiful teenagers. Let me give you a little background on the main characters.

After their mother, Sadie, is sent to rehab for crashing her car into a tree, the twins, Ellery and   Ezra will have to leave California and move in with their grandmother who lives in Echo Ridge. Ellery has always been drawn to true crime stories after Sadie's twin sister, Sarah disappeared as a teenager and was never found. Ellery believes the person who took Sarah might still be out there.

Next, five years earlier, the prom queen, Lacey Kilduff, was found murdered. Her boyfriend Declan was a person of interest and because of the way the town treated him, his father walked out on his family and Declan moved to another town nearby. This left Malcolm (Declan's younger sibling) and his mother by themselves until Peter, a successful attorney married his mother. Now Malcolm is living with Peter and his daughter, Katrin, who's Malcolm classmate. They are civil to each other but they don't like each other.

When the life of another teenager is on the line, Malcolm, Ellery, Ezra, and Mia will join forces to keep the people they care about safe.

Two Can Keep a Secret had a good narrative. I was interested in the characters and their fate. I was sure the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the two young women was related yet I can honestly say that I didn't guess who the culprit was until the very end.

The last line of the book is also a winner. What a great way to close the story!

“I felt all of the rushes, the adrenaline surges, the anger spikes… my heart pumping in fury. My eyes tearing up when my heart (I mean… her heart) would break.”

~Maryse’s Book Blog

The Rock Chick series is one of my favorites. I was ecstatic when I learned KA was finally writing the novella for Daisy and Marcus. These characters were very much a solid couple who were there for the girls as they came to find their soulmates in later books.

In my mind, Daisy is a younger version of a beautiful Dolly Parton. She has big hair and a big heart. She was dealt a bad hand. She had a lousy mother and an even lousier boyfriend. She leaves home when she can't take it any longer and in a new town, she makes her money stripping. She's good at it and she cares for her boss, Smithie, who's nice to all his girls. Then, something happens that threatens to destroy Daisy's view on life but Marcus is there to help her recover. He has the patience and the devotion she needs to heal.

"You aren't weak, Daisy"
It was so nice going back to the Rock Chick world. Some of my favorite books are part of this series. I love the Hot bunch and their girls. They are all special and so was Daisy and Marcus.

Daisy is sweet and caring. She deserved someone who would give her the castle she deserved. Marcus is dangerous, has a not so legal job but there was no doubt he would do anything for his Daisy.

Rock Chick Reawakening is classic KA!

“Who’s that tall, dark drink of handsome water?” I asked Ashlynn, my eyes on the tall man with broad shoulders and fabulous suit who was sauntering out of the club in the manner of a man who owned it.

In the manner of a man who owned anything he wanted.

“Don’t go there,” Ashlynn answered.

I looked to Ashlynn.

“What, sugar?”

She shook her head. “He’s hot. Knew a girl who’s had him and I’ll repeat, he’s hot. Took her out four times. All to fancy restaurants where she had to buy fancy dresses and shoes. And he gave it to her good at the end of the night, and I mean real good, the way she described it. He also, like, opened the car door for her and everything.”

Opened the car door for her.

And everything.

Oh my.

“Ended it with her giving her a gold bracelet,” Ashlynn carried on, recapturing my attention. “Pure class.” Her look got intense as she stared into my eyes. “And he’s trouble.”

I glanced to the door that he’d obviously gone through because he’d disappeared, then back to Ashlynn.

“Trouble?”

Ashlynn didn’t answer that question.

She just shook her head again and declared, “He wouldn’t date a stripper anyway. Like I said. He’s class.”

I felt my mouth get tight.

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing's changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Last Hit: Reloaded (Hitman #2.5)

Last Hit : Reloaded

MrsLeif's Review

This is a novella in the Hitman Series.

Daisy and Nick are happy together. They are trying to blend in with their surroundings after all the trouble they faced in Russia. Daisy wishes she had more friends and tries to befriend a girl at school. At first it looks like the girl is just using Daisy but something darker lurks behind her.

Nick loves Daisy and he wants to make her happy. He just doesn't know how to do normal. He was a hitman and in the past if someone was a problem, he took care of them. So not killing everyone who hurts Daisy's feelings is a huge impediment for him.  He doesn't need friends but he does need an outlet for his violence. Going to the shooting range becomes a distraction and also a way to keep his skills intact.

I liked Reloaded and I love being in Daniel's head. His way of dealing with problems made me smile at times. He was super protective but I understood his reasons for the things he did. Daisy on the other hand felt too naive at times. but she loves Nick and I was happy to see she would do anything to keep him in her life.

Last Hit (Hitman #1)
by Jessica Clare and Jen Frederick

Last Hit
Published November 30th 2013 by Pear Tree LLC
ARC provided by authors in exchange for an honest review.

Nicolai is a Russian hitman. He grew up in this world. At some point one of his hits didn't go as planned and his superior told him to get lost. He left and now does contract killing. While watching his new mark he discovers Daisy's apartment. Soon Daisy is all he can think of.

Daisy's life has been sheltered. Her father has agoraphobia and tries to keep her at home at all times. She only leaves the house for small errands like groceries or the library. One day she decides she can't do this anymore and she must run away. She leaves the farm and ends up sharing an apartment with a young girl. They live almost in poverty.

Daisy can't believe how attractive her new neighbor is. She meets him while doing her laundry. They strike a conversation and one thing leads to another one.

Daisy knows Nicolai is hiding something but she doesn't want to look to close. Unfortunately, she won't remain naive for too long.

I like Jessica Clare's (Jill Myles) books. They are always interesting. They are fast paced too.
I liked Nicolai. He is a tortured soul and so lonely. He wants Daisy to complete him.
I also enjoyed the action in this book. The end left me wanting to read the second book in this series since the characters were introduced here already.
I do wonder how damaged the heroine will be.
One thing I missed the most of The Last Hit was the humor that Jessica's book usually have. This one felt more serious.

"How can I not love this man who watches me with such adoration in his eyes? Who worships my body and soul? Who treats me like I am the most precious thing he has ever touched and scarce believes he is allowed to breathe my air?"

MrsAlcide's Review

Growing up with an agoraphobic father, Daisy has had anything but an ordinary life.  At 21 she is a prisoner of her own home.  She is ready to escape and begin living her life the way she chooses.

Nikolai is a trained killer.  An assassin.  He is watching a hit, and that’s when he sees Daisy.  He knows he has to have her, but at what cost?

***

I really loved this book.  I think that Daisy and Nikolai completely complimented each other.  He was a contract killer, while she was so sheltered.  At the same time though, they both understood death.

“If Nick is darkness with a kernel of light inside him, I am light with the matching kernel of darkness. It's what makes us so perfect for one another.”

Last Hit had it all.  It was intense, dark, suspenseful, and hot.   Nikolai was the perfect alpha male.  He was broody, protective, but still had a soft side and knew how to approach the innocent Daisy.

I was a little concerned about the ending with Daisy’s roommate, Regan, but now I am so excited to read Last Breath and read more about Regan and Daniel.
