Hounded by Kevin Hearne

Title: Hounded
Series: The Iron Druid Chronicles #1
Author: Kevin Hearne

The first novel in the Iron Druid Chronicles—introducing a cool, new, funny urban fantasy hero

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old—when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.

Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power—plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire, and werewolf team of attorneys, a bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish—to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.

“A friend will help ye move, Katie, but a really good friend will help ye move a body.”

As per my GR recommendation, I decided to start this series after I binged-listened to The Dresden Files. I can happily agree that it was the perfect book after I was done with Harry.

Atticus O' Sullivan is a druid. He has lived many centuries and he currently lives in Arizona. He's the owner of a bookshop, he can brew some powerful teas, loves his dog Oberon and he likes to have a low profile.  He looks young, around twenty-one, but looks can be deceiving. He's very powerful and he gets his power from the earth.

When the book begins, we learn that Atticus has been hiding from Aenghus Og. Aenghus Og is a god who is after a powerful sword called Fragarach which is under Atticus's care. For centuries, Atticus has avoided a confrontation but he's finally running out of time. Aenghus Og seemed to have several gods under his command plus a witch's coven to help him as well.  Atticus is getting tired of running. Confronting Aenghus with the aid of his friends and from a couple of goddesses is looking like the right move to make.

Hounded had great characters. I love UF worlds and this one is built solidly. Atticus is very powerful and smart. He has lived a long time by playing the right cards. He seems to have no financial problems. He has two great lawyers, one is a werewolf and the other is a vampire. The best character for me was his dog, Oberon. Oberon had so many funny moments that I lost count. I love his obsession with running, french poodles and sausages.

In regards to the fights, each of them was perfectly coordinated. I like that Atticus is powerful enough that he can fight almost anything. Some of the twists were not unexpected but I certainly want to know what happens next.

Cliffhanger: No
