Preston's Honor by Mia Sheridan

Title: Preston's Honor
Author: Mia Sheridan
Release Date: February 19, 2017

There were two brothers—identical twins—and though I loved them both, my soul belonged to only one.

Annalia Del Valle has loved Preston Sawyer all her life. The daughter of an impoverished migrant farmworker, she grew up as an outcast in what was no more than a tiny, cooped up shack in California’s Central Valley. But her heart found freedom in the land, in the wide-open spaces of Sawyer Farm, and in the boys who were her only friends.

Preston has yearned for Annalia since he was a boy. But a sense of honor kept him from pursuing her until he’s unable to hold back any longer and their worlds—and bodies—collide one hot summer night. A night that sets off a chain of events that will alter their lives forever.

Now Annalia is back in town after disappearing without a trace for six long months. Determined to reclaim her heart, her life, and the baby she left behind—the son who was created in a moment of lust and love and pent-up yearning.

Preston has survived grief, a ravaging drought, and the despair of heartache, but he’s not sure he can survive Annalia again. And he might be unwilling to try. Will pride and bitterness keep him from the one thing he’s always longed for?

How do you heal what is irreparably broken? How do you forgive that which is unforgivable? How do you discover that real honor comes not from circumstance, but from the place deep in our hearts where truth resides? And how do you move beyond the wounds of the past to discover that some loves are as solid as the ground beneath your feet, and as enduring as the earth itself?

THIS IS A STAND-ALONE SIGN OF LOVE NOVEL, INSPIRED BY GEMINI. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

"Make a fuss, mi amor."

I've enjoyed every book by Mia Sheridan I've read. Archer's Voice was one of my Top Books of 2014.

I love the idea of the zodiac signs having their own love stories. This time it what's Gemini's turn.

I think I could divide this story into 3 stages:

As kids:

Preston Sawyer is a twin. He and his brother Cole do everything together. Preston knows he wants to stay in the family's farming business while Cole is probably going to leave town when he's older. They both have befriended a migrant worker's daughter, Annalia Del Valle. They become friends when they are all so very young.

As teenagers:

Years later, when she is fifteen and they're eighteen and closer to leaving for college, Cole realizes he likes her and wants to be with her. Preston has always had feelings for Annalia. He just didn't show them. He's the quieter and serious brother while Cole is the jokester. As boys will have it, they do a race to decide who's going to be the one asking her out.

Lia's childhood has not been pleasant. She has grown up in poverty with a mother who has never been warm or caring towards her.  After her mother stopped working for Preston's family she started making her living cleaning motels. Lia tries to help her the best way she can. She avoids being a "burden". She prefers to be invisible and she avoids confrontation. She likes Cole but her strongest feelings are for Preston. She's quiet, reserved and she has self-imposed limits on what she can be able to accomplish. In a way, she's her own worst enemy.

As young adults:

Annalia is back in town. She's back for her son, to help her mother, and reconnect with the man she loves.

__

Preston's Honor is told in dual POV's. The beginning of the book is told in the present and then we're taken back to the past. Through their pain, we learned to love these characters and their tribulations.

Lia had a lack of self-worth. She avoided being considered a "problem". She wanted to just put her head down and go through life that way. Her upbringing shaped her into what she was as an adult. She had no one on her side except the Sawyer boys.

"Those damn parameters in which I would always be contained."

Preston was honorable and very protective of Lia. What he lacked was a good open communication skill with the woman he loved.  I know much of their angst could have been avoided if they both were more vocal about their feelings.

In the end, things worked out the best way they could and I really liked how things ended. I loved that Mia dares to leave the common paths and give us unique storylines.

"Come here, farm boy."

Cliffhanger: No

“Are you a virgin?” I ask.

“Well . . . yes.”

“Then why are you complaining? You qualify.”

Sarah’s eyes flash with annoyance. “Because I’m more than my hymen, Henry! To base the value of an accomplished, intelligent woman on a flimsy piece of skin is degrading. How would you feel if your worth rested on your foreskin?”

I think it over. And then I grin. “I’d be all right with that, actually. I’ve heard it was an impressive foreskin—all the nurses were fawning over it. It’s probably being showcased in a museum right now.”

She stares at me for a beat, then she laughs out loud—a rich, throaty, sensual sound.

“You’re a terrible human being.”

“I know.” I shake my head at the calamity of it all.

“And you’re an even worse feminist.”

“Agreed. That’s something I need to work on. You’ll help me, won’t you? We should spend as much time together as possible—every minute of the day and night. I’m hoping you’ll rub off on me.”

Sarah pushes my shoulder. “You’re just hoping I’ll rub you off.”

Now it’s my turn to laugh. Because she’s not even a little bit wrong.

“But there’s never been anyone? Really?”

Sarah shrugs. “Penny and I were tutored at home when we were young . . . but in year ten, there was this one boy.”

I rub my hands together. “Here we go—tell me everything. I want all the sick, lurid details. Was he a footballer? Captain of the team, the most popular boy in school?”

“He was captain of the chess team.”

I cover my eyes with my hand.

“His name was Davey. He wore these adorable tweed jackets and bow ties, he had blond hair and was a bit pale because of the asthma. He had the same glasses as me and he had a different pair of argyle socks for every day of the year.”

“I am so disappointed in you right now.”

“He was nice,” she chides. “You leave my Davey alone.”

I shake my head. “So what happened to old Davey boy?”

“I was alone in the library one day and he came up and started to ask me to the spring social. And I was so excited and nervous I could barely breathe. And then before he could finish the question, I . . .”

I don’t realize I’m leaning toward her until she stops talking and I almost fall over.

“You . . . what?”

Sarah hides behind her hands.

“I threw up on him.”

And I try not to laugh. I swear I try . . . but I’m only human. So I end up laughing so hard the car shakes and I can’t speak for several minutes.

“Christ almighty.”

“And I’d had fish and chips for lunch.” Sarah’s laughing too. “It was awful.”

“Oh you poor thing.” I shake my head, still chuckling. “And poor Davey.”

“Yes.” She wipes under her eyes with her finger. “Poor Davey. He never came near me again after that.”

“Coward—he didn’t deserve you. I would’ve swam through a whole lake of puke to take a girl like you to the social.”

She smiles so brightly at me, her cheeks maroon and round like two shiny apples.

“I think that’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me.”

I wiggle my eyebrows. “I’m all about the compliments.”

Gilded Cage (Dark Gifts #1)
by Vic James

Hardcover368 pages
Expected publication: February 14th 2017 by Del Rey Books
ISBN: 0425284158

Not all are free. Not all are equal. Not all will be saved.

Our world belongs to the Equals — aristocrats with magical gifts — and all commoners must serve them for ten years. But behind the gates of England's grandest estate lies a power that could break the world.

A girl thirsts for love and knowledge.

Abi is a servant to England's most powerful family, but her spirit is free. So when she falls for one of the noble-born sons, Abi faces a terrible choice. Uncovering the family's secrets might win her liberty, but will her heart pay the price?

A boy dreams of revolution.

Abi's brother, Luke, is enslaved in a brutal factory town. Far from his family and cruelly oppressed, he makes friends whose ideals could cost him everything. Now Luke has discovered there may be a power even greater than magic: revolution.

And an aristocrat will remake the world with his dark gifts.

He is a shadow in the glittering world of the Equals, with mysterious powers no one else understands. But will he liberate—or destroy?

Gilded Cage was an interesting book full of political intrigue and a huge cast of characters. I thought the world the author created was captivating and unique. The overall plot of this book was extremely compelling, but it did take me a while to become invested in this story. However, once I got invested in the story, I thought the plot of book became a lot more interesting.

This book had a lot of political intrigue, which was interesting, but it also made some of the chapters feel quite slow. I would have like a bit more action instead of politics in this book, but I do think the author did a great job at creating the politics of this world.

There were a lot of characters in this book, which I both loved and hated. I liked how there was a cast of characters that were all unique, but I had a hard time connecting to all of them. I think my issue was that the POVs changed so many times that I had a hard time remembering who was who.

With the POVs switching a lot, I thought it was a little difficulting really understanding the motives of the different characters and connecting with them. So, I am hoping for more character development in the next book! One of my favorite characters was actually Silyen, because I have a soft spot for morally gray characters. He was very charming but also extremely untrustworthy and mysterious. I couldn't help but become fascinated with his character.

There were touches of romances in this book, which was a nice element. There were forbidden romances, tragic romances, and so much more. The author included a lot of ships for me to ship, and I was definitely happy with that. However, I wasn't behind EVERY romance in the book. For example, one romance did feel like insta-love to me, so I wasn't 100% into that romance. I am really looking forward to seeing how some of the ships develop in the next book because I have a feeling some of them will end up ruining me.

Overall, I thought this was a promising start to a new series. The ending left me super excited to see what the author has planned next in this series!

Remy put her head on my shoulder and I got a small but distinct whiff of chocolate. “I might have to lick you, Rem,” I blurted.

Both Tater and Rylen turned to us, nearly cracking heads in the process. “She smells like chocolate,” I explained.

Tater shook his head and faced forward again. Ry gave me one last bemused look before turning back too.

“Hey,” Remy whispered. She raised her free hand to my face, and to my shock, there was half of the tiny candy pinched between her finger and thumb.

“I saved half for you.” My heart lurched with emotion. “Are you serious?” She nodded and her chin quivered as she raised the M&M to my mouth and fed it to me. She licked her fingers off while I savored the tiny morsel. My eyes watered as I crunched down and Remy said, “Good, right?”

A second later we were hugging and crying all over again. “We have to save our water,” I choked. She sniffled and let go of me to wipe her face. “No more crying.”

Island of Exiles was a gripping, addictive, and captivating book. This book sucked me in from the very first page. Island of Exiles was a book that pulled me in and never let me go! I was pleasantly surprised by this book!

I loved the world the author created, but I did have some issues with wrapping my head around everything. I thought the author did a great job of avoiding info-dumping, but I the world was so unique that there were some aspects that took me a while to completely understand and remember. I had to re-read a lot of parts to try and comprehend the workings of the world. The world and the fantasy elements of it were fascinating, even though I had a hard time understanding all of it.

The main character, Khya, was a badass! She was strong, loyal, cunning, powerful, and so much more. I loved her dedication to keeping her brother safe. It was so sweet to see a strong family bond in this novel. I really admired Khya, and I was rooting for her from the first page of this book.

The romance in this book made my heart skip a beat. I was so invested in the romance Khya found herself in during the book. I SHIP IT SO HARD. The banter between Khya and her love interest was PERFECT. I thought the romance was well paced and I never thought it took away from the main plot of the story. The love interest was snarky and extremely sassy, so I couldn't help but fall in love with him and ship him with Khya! The romantic moments in this book made me swoon, giggle, smile, gasp, and so much more. I was a BIG fan!

*swoons for days*

This book had an addictive quality to it that made it impossible for me to put the book down! There was plenty of action to get my heart racing and plenty romantic moments that almost made my heart explode with joy. The only issue I really had with this book was that I had a hard time fully understanding the world. Other than that, I really enjoyed this book! If you are looking for a unique YA fantasy, then I would recommend check out this book! I am DYING to get my hands on book two!

We weren’t a foot inside when he closed the door behind him and said, “Turn around, damsel,” indicating I should face away from him.

I complied, and he slowly came up behind me, running his hands along my bare upper back and down my arms. He unzipped the dress and pulled it off my shoulders so it pooled at my feet. I was naked except for my insanely high heels. Grabbing my hips, he pulled my naked ass into his front, and I could feel his hardness pushing against the seam of his trousers.

“Can you feel how much I want you? How much I want this?” he said firmly, increasing his grip on my hips, pulling me even closer.

I tilted my head back and to the side to try to steal a glimpse of him, and he rested his chin on my shoulder. His hands wrapped around and palmed my breasts. He pushed them in and up, molding them in his palms, and he began to tug at my nipples, rolling them between his thumb and finger, teasing them to the point where pain met pleasure.

“I’m breaking all sorts of rules for you, aren’t I?” He was kissing my neck, sucking my skin, nipping it gently between his teeth, devouring me in motions that mimicked what he was doing to my breasts.

“What rules have you broken for me?” I asked, practically whispering, searching for steadiness in my breath.

He spun me around and lifted me by my ass in one swift move. I locked my ankles behind his back.

“For starters I rarely sleep with the same woman twice, at least not in the same week. I don’t spend the night. Ever. And neither do the women I see. And I don’t invite women into my office. Ever. But I couldn’t resist with you. I’d been dreaming about having my mouth on that pretty pussy on that table for weeks. Picturing you just as you were.”

“Did it live up to the dream?” I nuzzled into his cheek, desperate to get to a place where he was naked, where I could feel his skin on my skin.

“The dream didn’t stand a chance.”

“Well, I wouldn’t want you breaking any of your rules, would I? I mean, maybe we better stop now, and you could sleep on my sofa. Or you can get back on your horse—”

“Not on your life, smartass.”
