See Me by Nicholas Sparks

See me just as I see you . . .

Colin Hancock is giving his second chance his best shot. With a history of violence and bad decisions behind him and the threat of prison dogging his every step, he's determined to walk a straight line. To Colin, that means applying himself single-mindedly toward his teaching degree and avoiding everything that proved destructive in his earlier life. Reminding himself daily of his hard-earned lessons, the last thing he is looking for is a serious relationship.

Maria Sanchez, the hardworking daughter of Mexican immigrants, is the picture of conventional success. With a degree from Duke Law School and a job at a prestigious firm in Wilmington, she is a dark-haired beauty with a seemingly flawless professional track record. And yet Maria has a traumatic history of her own, one that compelled her to return to her hometown and left her questioning so much of what she once believed.

A chance encounter on a rain-swept road will alter the course of both Colin and Maria's lives, challenging deeply held assumptions about each other and ultimately, themselves. As love unexpectedly takes hold between them, they dare to envision what a future together could possibly look like . . . until menacing reminders of events in Maria's past begin to surface.

As a series of threatening incidents wreaks chaos in Maria's life, Maria and Colin will be tested in increasingly terrifying ways. Will demons from their past destroy the tenuous relationship they've begun to build, or will their love protect them, even in the darkest hour?

Rich in emotion and fueled with suspense, SEE ME reminds us that love is sometimes forged in the crises that threaten to shatter us . . . and that those who see us for who we truly are may not always be the ones easiest to recognize.

It was with trepidation that I started See Me. I was scared Nicholas Sparks was going to kill one of the main characters. I'm glad to report this is not the case.

Maria Sanchez is a lawyer. She recently started working for a new firm after moving back home. She left behind a bad situation at work and she needed to distance herself from it. She works hard and hardly goes out except for paddleboarding and going to visit her parents. One night she gets a flat tire and the man who helps her looks like he has been in a fight. She is terrorized to accept his help but in the end she knows it's the only way.

Colin Hancock has an anger problem. Since childhood he has been in trouble and fighting is the only thing he knows. He had several problems with the law and if he makes one more mistake he could go to prison for a decade. It doesn't help that the cop who is checking up on him doesn't like him. He has tried to steer clear of trouble by avoiding drugs and bars. Also, his best friend and his fiancee are very supportive of him. Meeting Maria that night, in the rain and helping her change her tire will change his life.

Once Maria and Colin start a friendship, they also realize they are attracted to each other. Just when things seem to be progressing smoothly, Maria realizes she has a stalker.

I loved all the characters in this book. Colin's honesty was refreshing. He made me smile more than once. He was a good friend, knew his limitations and worked hard to stay out of trouble.

Maria was smart, determined to succeed and had a great family support. I really love her sister Serena.

Colin's friends were great too. I love how Eli told Colin when he was making a mistake. Lily was sweet and very supportive of Colin wooing Maria.

I like the suspense this novel had. Who was the stalker is a big part of the mystery. If you are looking for a good romance with suspense this is it!
Now, how long do I have to wait for the movie???

Cliffhanger: No
