Dark Heart of Magic by Jennifer Estep

Something Wicked This Way Comes...

As a thief, I stick to the shadows as much as possible. But when the head of the Sinclair Family picks me to compete in the Tournament of Blades, there's no escaping the spotlight—or the danger.

Even though he's my competition, Devon Sinclair thinks I have the best shot at winning what's supposed to be a friendly contest. But when the competitors start having mysterious "accidents," it looks like someone will do anything to win—no matter who they hurt.

As if I didn't have enough to worry about, mobster Victor Draconi is plotting against Devon and the rest of my friends, and someone's going around Cloudburst Falls murdering monsters. One thing's for sure. Sometimes, humans can be more monstrous than anything else...

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so I was really excited to read this book. I thought the premise of this book sounded really interesting and action packed, but it was actually a lot slower than I thought it would be. There were times in this book were I thought the book was action packed and my heart was pounding. Those parts of the book were awesome and super exciting. The parts that were slower dealt a lot with the angst between the couples in this book. I love all of the characters, and I really like the couples together. However, I hated the angst that the couples create. Their relationships had a lot of drama, and I could not stand it.

I was happy that by the end of the book, the couples seemed to overcome their issues. I am now really excited to read the next book, because the couples are finally in good places. I cannot wait to see the romances develop more.

I still really liked the mafia aspect of this book. The magic and fantasy aspects of this book were just as interesting as I was hoping. I really enjoyed the action scenes in this book. All of the sword fights were really exciting to read about.

Overall, I really liked this book! I thought it was fun addition to this series. I did not like it as much as the first book, but I still enjoyed it. I just wish there weren't as many parts in the book that felt slow. However, I am really looking forwarding to reading the next book in this series!
