Ride Steady (Chaos #3)
by Kristen Ashley

Ride Steady by Kristen Ashley
(June 30, 2015; Forever Mass Market; Chaos #3)

Synopsis

The ride of her life . . .

Once upon a time, Carissa Teodoro believed in happy endings. Money, marriage, motherhood: everything came easy---until she woke up to the ugly truth about her Prince Charming. Now a struggling, single mom and stranded by a flat tire, Carissa's pondering her mistakes when a vaguely familiar knight rides to her rescue on a ton of horsepower.

Climb on and hold tight . . .
In high school, Carson Steele was a bad boy loner who put Carissa on a pedestal where she stayed far beyond his reach. Today, he's the hard-bodied biker known only as Joker, and from the way Carissa's acting, it's clear she's falling fast. While catching her is irresistible, knowing what to do with her is a different story. A good girl like Carissa is the least likely fit with the Chaos Motorcycle Club. Too bad holding back is so damned hard. Now, as Joker's secrets are revealed and an outside threat endangers the club, Joker must decide whether to ride steady with Carissa---or ride away forever . . .

“What now?” he clipped, planting his hands on his hips.
I watched him do this.
His knuckles were all scabbed. But his fingers were long, not graceful, but handsome. They were a working man’s hands. They’d be rough. I could even see grease stains around the nail beds.
Something about that caused something to happen inside me.
My focus shifted from his hands to his crotch. His jeans were faded. The area around his crotch more faded.
Up I went to a black belt with silver rivets in it that had seen some wear, the length beyond the clasp dangling from a belt loop to the side in a supple way, the leather not close to stiff.
Up his flat belly to his wide chest and broad shoulders and bulging arms.
And up to his long black hair that looked thick, messy, had a lot of wave and brushed his shoulders. His beard wasn’t  bushy, it was trimmed, but it was about two days away from being unkempt.
He was tall.
He was annoyed.
I felt the latter because he was the kind of man whose mood altered a room and I understood this because I was right then experiencing it. But I also knew it wasn’t just that or that we were the only ones in the room and having the conversation that was making him annoyed so of course I’d be feeling it.
It was him. He had that kind of power behind his personality.
I shifted my eyes to his.
Steel. A strange flat color that seemed impenetrable.
And suddenly I had a new dream. One that didn’t involve motherhood, cookies, doing laundry, and being a soccer mom.
One that centered around penetrating the impenetrable.
“So? What?” he prompted irately.
At his words, I flew across the room.
He had the chance to go back on a boot but that was all he had before my body slammed into his, my hands went to either side of his head and I lifted up on tiptoe as I yanked him down.
Then I pressed my lips hard against his.
A breath later, something strange happened.
Strange and wondrous.
His arms closed around me, and if I could think of anything, I’d worry about the state of my ribs.
But I couldn’t think of anything because his tongue spiked into my mouth and my world changed.
My entire world.
I didn’t have a dead sister.
I didn’t have a dead mother.
I didn’t have a lonely father looking after his mother, who was addled with Alzheimer’s disease.
I didn’t have an exhusband, who I once loved who I thought would cherish and protect me and help me build my dream, but now was making my life a misery and trying to take my son away from me.
I had this.
All of it. All the biker named Joker gave me by holding me so tight it was a pain that hurt so good and who was invading my mouth with his tongue in a way that stated clearly he could do it for a lifetime and never get enough.
My hands left his head so I could curve my arms around his shoulders as I pressed closer.
In return, one of his hands slid up my spine. He pulled out my ponytail holder and drove his fingers into my hair, cupping the back of my head, tilting it one way while he slanted his the other. He deepened the kiss in an intoxicating way while his other hand glided down and cupped one cheek of my behind.
That felt good.
He shuffled me back.
I went with him.
We kept kissing.
Then he turned quickly and we were falling.
Then he turned quickly and we were falling.
He landed on his back on the bed. I landed on him but barely had the opportunity to experience the dizzying beauty of the long length of his hard frame under mine before I was given more beauty when he rolled me and I had the weight of his hard frame pressing mine into the bed.
His hand left my bottom and went up, fingers yanking at my navy LeLane’s polo shirt, pulling it from my khakis, and then I had its heat, skin against skin.
I was right.
His hands were rough.

Carissa "Butterfly" Teodoro thought her life was going to be perfect after marrying the man she fell in love with. Now, she knows she is not living in a fairy tale. She is divorced, with her small baby son Travis and having a hard time paying her bills. Her ex-husband cheated on her with someone younger who has a perfect figure. When her car breaks down in the middle of the road, she is tempted to cry. If she doesn't get Travis on time to see his dad, her ex-husband might try to get a new judge to name her an unfit mother.  At first, when a biker stops to help her, she is unsure of what to do. Her son on the other hand is taken by him. The hot biker reminds her of someone but she really can't tell who he is with the beard covering his face.

Carson "Joker" Steele came back to Colorado to join the Chaos MC. As a child he was living in a nightmare. Her mother walk out on him even before he could talk and his dad thought of him as nothing more than a punching bag.  Joker has nothing in his life that can make him smile until Carissa enters his world again. As a teenager, he loved her from a distance and now he can love her as a man if he decides that he is worth it.

I love KA's books. Tack (Motorcycle Man) is one of my favorite books of all times.  Her books can make me laugh, cry, smile, repeat. I was very happy with Ride Steady. It had the perfect combination.

Carissa was sweet, caring and a great mother. She didn't want jewelry or big houses. She wanted to be a wife and a mother. To her, family was important. She had suffered so much loss already. She was desperate to feel stability in her life.

"I needed steady”

She also could be funny.

“What the fuck are you doin’?” he asked when I didn’t answer his opening question.
“That’s twenty cents,” I returned.
“Hunh?” he grunted.
“Regular curse words are a nickel,” I told him. “Bad curse words are a dime. Everyone knows the f-word is a bad one and since, starting now, you’re paying me every time you curse, that’s twenty cents you owe me.”

Joker was a good guy with a good heart. He joined the MC to feel that he belonged somewhere. He trusted his brothers with his life. The club also let him do what he wanted. Design bikes. He tried to push Carissa away because he didn't think he was good enough for her. I love that we get Shy, Tack and Rush to help him realize he needed to keep her in his life. I also loved how careful and protective he was of Travis. And Travis melted my heart with all the cute stuff he did.

“You and me and your boy. I know what we got. I know I like what we got. I know I wanna keep that strong and make it stronger. Shit happens. I hope like fuck it happens to us, we’ll fight through to the other side. But I know this and you gotta know it too: No matter what happens, I will never, not ever, not fuckin’ ever, Carissa, regret ridin’ down that shoulder to help you and your boy. It’s the best decision I ever made in my life, and I know that in a way I know I’ll feel that until the day I fuckin’ die.”

To make life even sweeter, KA gave us cameos. Lee, Indy, Hank, Hawk, Elvira, Brock, Mitch, Knight are all a part of this book. My heart did a little flip of happiness every time one will pop out.

I’d lost Althea. I’d lost Mom. To deal with the pain and make sure I lost nothing else, I’d put blinders on, made my mistakes, and then my dream had died.
But now the loss was over.
The blinders were off.
And I had Travis.
Then I got Joker.
And he gave me Chaos.
So it was done.
I was done losing.
And in being done, eyes open, facing ahead, back straight, head in the game, I was ready to win.

Excerpt

Taking a deep breath, Beckett knocked on the door.
No answer.
He turned the knob, and the door opened.
“Go away,” came a strained voice.
Beckett poked his head through the opening. Kat sat in a ball in the corner, her legs pulled up to her chest, her arms hugging herself tight.
“Aw, Jesus, Beckett. Really?” Her face was splotchy and her eyes watery, though he didn’t see any tears.
Ten-to-one she was going through some adrenaline letdown right now, too. Which no doubt made it all worse. That shit could fuck you up even when you were used to how it left you feeling drained and shaky, by how all the stress you’d suppressed during the height of the crisis boomeranged twice over after the fact.
He came into the room, closed the door, and turned the lock for good measure. And then he crossed to Kat, scooped his arms under her knees and behind her back and lifted her up against him.
She smacked his chest. “Put me down.”
“No.” He moved to the edge of the bed.
“I don’t need this right now, Beckett. Put me down.”
“Yes, you do,” he said, sitting on the edge of the mattress. He pulled her face in against his throat and smoothed her hair back from her cheek. She trembled against him, just the littlest bit, her skin hot to the touch. He pressed a kiss to her forehead and hugged her tighter. “You did good, kid.”
Every one of her muscles went tight. Her hand fisted in his shirt. And her breath caught as she buried her face against his neck and shoulder.
Then Kat burst out crying.
And it was like being torn apart and put back together, all at once. He hated her pain, but he adored that she wasn’t hiding herself from him, and that she was letting him be there for her.
He didn’t shush her, or try to talk her down, or encourage her to dry her eyes. To be sure, her tears were like daggers in his heart—they hurt like fucking hell. But the only way she was going to feel better was to let this shit out. Ironic realization for him—he did actually see that. But just because you could see what was good for others didn’t mean you had the first goddamned idea how to apply those principles in your own life. And that was a problem for another time anyway.

What mattered right now was Kat. What mattered … was Kat.

Beckett Murda is one of the five Special Forces soldiers trying to find the truth behind the ambush that killed part of their team in Afghanistan. He's also living with the guilt of Marz losing his leg to save his life during say attack. He'll do anything to clear their names and he's a no nonsense kind of guy. He watched his fellow soldiers fall in love but for him the mission comes first. Until Katherine Rixey comes to visit her brothers. Now, Beckett knows he's screwed.

"Beckett had to admit that something about Kat distracted him, irritated him, made him...feel."

Katherine Rixey is an attorney. She's feisty, smart, and determined. Most of the times she can take care of herself. Going back home to find her brothers under attack was not what she was expecting but now that she's with them, she won't leave them until they are all safe. Even if it means tolerating Murda's grumpiness. She can't seem to keep from butting heads with him, so why does she want to kiss him??

~~

I was sad to start this book.  I knew it was the end to this series. These amazing characters have battled the evil who took away their honor and they have fought hard to clear their names from the conspiracy surrounding them. During this fight they lost allies and friends but they also gained love and friendship.
I have enjoyed every single book in the Hard Ink series. In Hard to Let Go, Laura does a great job in giving us the HEAs we wanted but also closing all those loose ends in a nice perfect package.  There is a lot of action and romance during this one too. Kat was a great character, she was a Rixey through and through. Murda had a tough life and Kat was the perfect girl to help him overcome it.
I'm going to miss this crew's banter, Cyclops, Eileen. My hope is that we get the Raven Riders books next.

Heat of the Moment (Sisters of the Craft #2) by Lori Handeland

This book had a solid start. Becca and Owen had a lot of chemistry right from the beginning, which made me extremely excited to see the development of their relationship. However, their romance was kind of a let down for me. The chemistry between Becca and Owen was the only thing that kept me interested in their relationship. Becca was always so hot and cold with their relationship. One second she would be telling Owen that she was in love with him, and then the next second, she was telling him to stay away from her. Becca just came off as really whiny and immature when it came to the romance department. It also drove me insane that Becca never confronted Owen about their falling out. I just was not a huge fan of Becca or the romance.

Another thing that I didn't like in this book was how Becca treated the family that raised her. I understood that she was upset that they kept a secret from Becca. However, they were still her family! They raised her and took her in when they didn't have to. Becca just seemed so disrespectful. What annoyed me even more was that as soon as she met her biological family, she instantly loved them. She was horrible to the family that was wonderful to her (besides keeping that one secret), but then was completely wonderful to total strangers who claimed to be her biological family members?

The one aspect that I enjoyed in this book was the paranormal aspect. The book was always extremely interesting and addictive whenever magic was involved. The reason I was able to give this book a 3 out of 5 was because of the magic aspect of this book. I am a sucker for magic, and I found the magic aspect in this book to be very intriguing.

This book was good, but it wasn't great. I thought the book was quite enjoyable at times, but really frustrating at other times. I think this book has great bones, but it just wasn't executed the way I was hoping. I will continue this series though, because I am very interested to see how the series will continue to develop!

Miss Match by Laurelin McGee

I loved the premise of this book, and I was super exciting to see how this book was going to play out. As I was reading this book, I found myself laughing out loud at the banter between Andrea and Blake. The banter was geeky and quick witted, which is my favorite type of banter! Andrea and Blake also had a lot of steamy chemistry that made my kindle feel hot in my hands.

What I really liked about the main character, Andrea, was that she had a lot of backbone and spunk. She would always speak her mind, and I thought that was really refreshing. I also enjoyed how witty Andrea whenever she would get into a fight with someone, mainly Blake. What I didn't like about Andrea was that she sometimes came off as rude and brash.

Blake was definitely a hot alpha male, and I enjoyed that very much.

Blake was hot, but he was also a closet geek, which I adored. It was so cute seeing Blake's geek side come out with Andrea. However, it took a very long time for me to warm up to Blake. He was an annoying jerk in the beginning of the book. He would said such crude things that I wanted to punch him. At some points in the book, I did not think I would ever like him. I am glad he had a lot of character development, but I still can't get over how rude he was in the beginning.

I think I would have also enjoyed the book a little bit more if it was not revealed right away that both Blake and Andrea were extremely attracted to each other right away. I wish they had fought their feelings a little bit more, because I think it would have made the book a little more exciting. However, the romance was still cute and passionate, so I am grateful for that!

Overall, I thought this book was a fun and light read. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a fun contemporary romance to read. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author!

Andrea Dawson is in desperate need of a job. Her background is in marketing. On her last job she lost it all when she didn't become intimate with her old boss. When her sister points her towards an opportunity she could be good at it, she's forced to look into it. Feeling attracted to the boss is not what she was expecting.

Blake Donovan is lonely. He wants a wife. He just doesn't have the time to look for one. His job is demanding. Hiring someone to provide candidates for him to pick a wife, sounded good on paper.
When he meets Andrea, she is everything he doesn't want in a wife. He wants someone quiet, who doesn't want to work and won't mind cooking and staying at home.

So why does fighting with Andrea brings him more joy than he has had in a long time??

~~

This was a cute story. Blake, being the closet geek he really was, made me fall in love with him. A guy who can keep "Puppy" can make me like him regardless of how much of a chauvinistic pig he can appear in the beginning.

It was harder for me to like Andrea. For someone who needed a job so desperately, she sure waited a while to find any type of job. Only when her sister tells her, she can't afford to maintain both of them is when she starts looking for something.

I did love their sparring and banter and  I laughed during their fights.
For the most part, I enjoyed the book.

In The Afterlight by Alexandra Bracken
The Darkest Minds #3

I am so sad that this series is over, because I loved it so much! This book was my least favorite of the series, but I still really liked it!

I felt like the beginning of the book was a little slow, but after about 100 pages, the book began to pick up the pace. After that, the book was just as exciting as the others. This book was a lot darker than the others. It was not as light and fun as the first and second book. This book had a lot of angst that made me want to hit my head into a wall sometimes. The lack of communication between characters in this book was so frustrating! They would keep secrets from one another to protect each other, but it just strained their relationships even more. The angst in the relationships between the characters almost gave me a headache.

Even though the characters were frustrating at times, I still loved them. They were flawed heroes, but I think that's what made them great heroes. I was so happy to have Zu, Vida, Chubs, Liam, and Ruby together and kicking butt in this book. As I said earlier, there was a lot of miscommunication between the characters, but once they would actually talk, it lead to some really tender scenes in the book.

I really liked the way the story was wrapped up in this final book. There was enough closure to make my heart so happy. The last few pages of the book really made my heart warm. I am glad that the final book didn't end completely open ended or really sad. It was happy and extremely hopefully. I was smiling after I closed the book. There were things about this book I didn't like (as I mentioned before), but I did enjoy the book as a whole. This was a good way to end the series. I am happy I read it and went on a emotional journey with these wonderful characters. I still recommend this series to anyone thinking about starting it!

I can't wait to see what Alexandra has in store for us in the future, because she is an amazing author. Everyone needs to read this series ASAP. This series will not disappoint.

Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3) by Sarah J. Maas

Celaena has survived deadly contests and shattering heartbreak―but at an unspeakable cost. Now, she must travel to a new land to confront her darkest truth . . . a truth about her heritage that could change her life―and her future―forever. Meanwhile, brutal and monstrous forces are gathering on the horizon, intent on enslaving her world. Will Celaena find the strength to not only fight her inner demons, but to take on the evil that is about to be unleashed?

The bestselling series that has captured readers all over the world reaches new heights in this sequel to the New York Timesbest-selling Crown of Midnight. Packed with heart-pounding action, fierce new characters, and swoon-worthy romance, this third book will enthrall readers from start to finish.

This book was more of a slow burn compared to the other two books. It took me some time to get adjusted to that because the other books were so action paced and fast paced right from the start. The paced seemed slow, but it was still extremely interesting. Once I reached about the 200 page mark, I felt like the pace picked up and I quickly devoured the rest of the book.

What made this book so interesting was that Sarah dived into the Fae world a lot more, and I really enjoyed getting to learn more about the Fae, their magic, and their history.

Another aspected I really liked in this book was the fact that there were a lot of new characters. Sarah did a wonderful job of creating a whole set of new characters that I became very fond of, especially Rowan.....

Looks aside, I think Rowan might be my favorite character in the series now. I found myself so intrigued by his character, and I wanted to learn more and more about him. His friendship with Celaena was so heart warming. Both Rowan and Celaena grew a lot in this book, and a majority of the growth was because of their relationship. I cannot wait to see them kick butt together and be best friends forever. Also, I would like to volunteer to be Rowan's mate.

Celaena was absolutely amazing in this book. She was just as snarky and awesome as ever, but she had so much character growth. This book really delved into her past, and I loved seeing Celaena's shell slowly peel back. Celaena seemed so much more relatable and human even though she was channeling more of her fae powers. Celaena kicked major booty in this book, and those scenes were epic. I cannot wait to see what she accomplishes in the next book.

Chaol and Dorian were still prominent characters in the story, much to my delight. I really like the direction Sarah is taking with Chaol and Dorian. I cannot wait to see what will happen with them in the book!

When it comes to the romance, I am honestly kind of just over it. I still want romance in this book, but just want the love triangle to die. I am tired of the angst building because of the romance in this book. I want Celaena, Chaol, and Dorian to all find love. I don't care who it is with, I just want to see everyone happy and in a cute relationship. Then they can all kick butt together and save the world. I am still on the fence as to which "team" I am in this series. I think Celaena would be great with either of the guys. Whoever she doesn't end up with, I hope they still get a happy ending.

So, I want the romance, I just don't want the angst and heart break. Sarah, could you do that for me?

THE ENDING OF THIS BOOK WAS BRILLIANT.

I NEED THE NEXT BOOK ASAP.

Gates of Thread and Stone (Gates of Thread and Stone #1) by Lori M. Lee

A beautiful cover, time travel, adventure, romance, and a strong sibling relationship? That sounds like an amazing book to me!

Unfortunately, it just fell flat.

This book was really disappointing, because I had really high hopes for it! The first 20% of the book was really interesting, and I was flying through the book. After that, I felt like the book began to drag. I just got really bored. This "adventure" felt more like just Kai pining over Avan. I love a good romance, but this one was just bland. I really did not see the romantic connection between Kai and Avan. I felt like they were friends pretending to be in love? Some scenes between them were cute, but they were not really believable for the characters.

Speaking of the characters, I really did not like Kai. I was expecting Kai to be a badass or become a badass, but she really wasn't. I would have been okay with her growing into a badass, but she spent most of the time just talking about how attractive Avan was. I was tired of hearing about how attractive Avan was. I wanted more action or anything really. I felt like the romance just wasn't developed well, and it made the story drag.

“I leaned against his side and felt his arm circle my shoulders. Even though I knew it wasn’t true, I imagined his warmth like a Sun that shone just for me.”

I was disappointed with this book because it had such great potential. As I said earlier, the first 20% of the book was really good, but then it just went astray. I kept reading because I kept feeling like something interesting had to happen. I am giving this book 3 stars because when the book was interesting, it was so good! It just fell flat a lot, and the angst made the book boring and repetitive. The last couple chapters were also interesting, so I am interested to read the next book. However, I am hoping the next book has more action and plot, and less angst.

Searching for Always (Searching For #4)

The Searching series is one of my favorites. Last year sexy Nerd guy Nate stole my heart. A month ago I added Wolfe to my list of sexy book boyfriends and this month my new addition is sexy Officer Stone Petty.

In Searching for Perfect I saw the sparks ignite between Arilyn and Stone and I couldn't wait to read their book. Luckily, I didn't have to wait long.

Arilyn Meadows made a choice early in her life to treat her body and soul as a temple. She is a yoga instructor, she volunteers in an animal shelter, she takes care of her grandfather Poppy and she's the teacher for the new Anger Management 6 weeks program. By contrast her personal life is a mess. She discovered her boyfriend of five years cheating again. This time she is done with him and maybe with relationships in general until Stone steps back into her life.

Stone Petty is in big trouble. He's a cop but he let his anger fly wild during a domestic violence call. His superior is forcing him to do an anger management course. He doesn't believe this is going to help him but he has no other choice than to take the mandatory class. He was not expecting his teacher to be the hippie girl he had words before.

This two are polar opposites but neither can deny the chemistry they share.

I love this book. I love the characters. I'm not saying Arilyn didn't get on my nerves at times but she deserved happiness after wasting her time with her looser ex-boyfriend for FIVE years! Good riddance !
Officer Stone Petty is a big guy, follows the law, has a rough appearance. He can be hard-headed and arrogant at times but he also can be very sweet and sexy. His banter with his fellow officers was super funny. I wonder if his partner Devine is getting a book. Please say yes!
The ladies from Kinnections are all in this book. Jennifer gives us a treat by sharing one of the couples wedding. Stone is accepted by the other guys in the series because they all share the same thing. They all love their women.
Don't get me even started on the pets. Pinky stole my heart and Stone's relationship with her was just perfect. It made me love him so much more. It also serves as to my favorite line in this book:

"I'm here to pick up Pinky."

Kiss Me (Fool's Gold #17)
by Susan Mallery

Phoebe Kitzke has been suspended from her job. Her last attempt at helping others almost landed her in jail. She has a big heart and sometimes people take advantage of her. She is determined to stop helping everyone. This lasts about 2.4 seconds when her best friend Maya asks her for her help with a family situation. Maya needs someone to create a diversion between her step-brothers Zane and Chase and she thinks Phoebe can do it. Phoebe can't say no and in the blink of an eye she finds herself on the ranch owned by Zane. The hot cowboy is definitely interesting to say the least.

Zane Nicholson is about to loose his patience. His younger brother created a scheme and now he's getting people traveling to his land for a cattle drive. He decides to teach his brother a lesson in responsibility. He makes the cattle drive a real thing,  making sure his brother works hard during it. What he wasn't expecting was to fall for the city girl her sister sends his way.

I'm new to Susan Mallery's Fool's Gold series. I recently read Hold Me and knew she had me as reader forever.
Kiss me was sweet loving story.
It was hard not to like Phoebe with her big heart and her love of nature and animals. Her talks with Manny were too funny.
Zane was the typical reclusive and taciturn guy. He likes his peace and quiet. But, Phoebe was there to open his eyes to what he was missing. I love their first kiss.
Zane was also very patient with his brother and the mess he created.
The side story lines also grabbed my attention and I was happy with their conclusion too.
