The Closer You Come (The Original Heartbreakers #1)
by Gena Showalter

The Closer You Come

Brook Lynn Dillon wishes she could relax and have some fun. Instead she is always working and when she isn't, she's following her sister Jessie and trying to keep her out of trouble.
When she finishes her work shift, she gets a call from her best friend telling her to come and get her sister who's trashed again. When she gets there despite an uncomfortable situation, she does what needs to be done. This sets her on a path directly in front of Jase. Brook is confused about her feelings towards him especially when he offered her a job she desperately needs. Spending time with him could be more than what she bargained for.

Jase moved with his two best friends, Beck and West to Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma. They bought a property and he's restoring it.  He spent the last nine years in prison and now having a place to feel safe is all he wants. He seeks a quiet life but Brook changes his plans in just a couple of encounters. He doesn't want to admit he's attracted to her but offering her a job and spending days together is destroying his resolution. Once Jason realized the inevitable, revealing his darkest secrets to Brook may make him loose her.

I'm happy to report that I loved this book. I thought the story had unique characters. Being in Brook's head was funny especially with her obsession with Zombies. She was a great sister, a hard worker, she was a good friend and she deserved happiness. She had insecurities but she never let them interfere with her life to the point of becoming a crutch.
Jase, he won me over after a few minutes in his head. He had so much baggage. His last nine years were awful. He thought he didn't deserve to be happy. My heart broke every time he talked about his experience in prison.
I couldn't put this book down and when the twist comes (which you know is coming) it was more than what I expected. I was like, no way. How do we go around it? In the end Gena Showalter settles everything in the best way possible.
I can't wait for the rest of the crowd to get their own stories. I can already tell I'm going to enjoy them.

Cliffhanger: No
