A Shade of Vampire (A Shade of Vampire #1) by Bella Forrest

A Shade of Vampire

Sofia Claremont is kidnapped on her seventeenth birthday. She is taken by vampires to an island where the sun doesn't shine. When she wakes up to discover she will be part of the harem for the Dark Prince, she is terrified.  She has also lost her best friend/crush Ben in the process.

Derek Novak has been asleep for a while. When he wakes up he's starving and he needs to feed. But, when he meets Sofia, something stops him. He feels a connection with her and wishes to get to know her. Unfortunately, Sofia is not safe despite having Derek as her protector. Evil lurks too close to her.

I wish I could say that I liked this book but I found myself not being able to connect with either character. Everything felt so rushed. I believe the lack of character development was a good part of the reason why I didn't relate to it. In addition, the insta-connection really hurts the story. I mean Derek sees Sofia and despite probably being starving, he has one look at her and boom he wants to protect her from everyone and everything. It just didn't feel true to me.
