The Secret She Can't Hide by India Grey

Kate fell for a race car driver, Cristiano, four years ago. He was in a near fatal accident on the track after they spend a wonderful night together.

Four years have passed and Kate has a son. She will not move on with her life until she knows there is no possibility of a family with Cristiano. She has tried to contact him on several occasions without much luck, until she gets invited to his return to the track party.

They see each other, he follows her and they spend sometime together in a cabin. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember the last twenty four hours before the car crash which is the time he spent with her four years ago.

She leaves when she gets a phone call telling her Alexander, her son, is sick with meningitis.

Cristiano follows her after he finds out he has a son.

In the end she is able to let go of her fear for his life as a racing driver but it makes his choice somewhat unbelievable.

Vanished (Faithgirlz!/ Boarding School Mysteries #1) by Kristi Holl

Twelve-year-old Jeri McKane attends boarding school. Her life changes when her best friend and roommate Rosa goes missing. Before Rosa's disappearance, her greatest fear was that her mom would not be able to attend Parent's Weekend at the end of the month.

But it is not only Rosa who disappears but the school van carrying several children. Fingers are pointed in different directions. Jenna doesn't know who to trust at times.

It is up to Jenna to find the clues and bring Rosa back without getting hurt.

This is a Cristian literature.

The short story is fast and as long as you can believe a twelve-year-old is able to accomplish what the police couldn't, you will enjoy it.

Scent of a Vampire by Jude Stephens

Scent of a Vampire
The Evolved #1
Jude Stephens

Olivia (true name Orenda) is a divorced physical therapist going on a long weekend trip with her best friend Janel to Atlantic City. She has self esteem issues due to her prior marriage. She has recently started noticing she has a "curse". She can tell there is a musky scent associated with death.

When they get to the hotel she notices two sexy men. She gets invited by Alex to his hotel and is accompanied to it by Roberto, an Italian vampire. The hotel is attacked and both men are there to protect her.

Both vampires know she is a Sensay. Olivia will get more powers after she turns thirty. Better vision, hearing, etc. Since she is able to smell death she notices both men have this scent and they convince her they are vampires.

At the beginning of the story it looks like she is falling for Alex. Once Alex goes missing, she starts a relationship with Roberto.

The enemies of supernatural beings are the Guardians, who at first tried to recruit her then they try to kill her.

We meet second characters, one specially is very likable. His name is Leeds and he is a devil.

Olivia is from a Native American descent. Her spirit guide presents as a wolf.

I finished this book and I enjoyed some parts of it. However, some parts were redundant. At the end of the book, you don't know if she picked the right guy to stay with.

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Shiver
The Wolves of Mercy Falls #1
Maggie Stiefvater

Shiver is the story about Grace, a girl who was attacked by what she thought werewolves at the age of eleven. She was rescued by a golden-eyed werewolf, Sam, who can become human during the summer.

The premise of this book is that the hot temperature makes werewolves become human. The colder it gets the more likely it is for them to change into wolves. The longer they are werewolves, the higher chance they have to stay wolves forever.

Sam was bitten as a child and almost murdered by his parents after finding out that he can become a wolf. He runs with the pack and for unknown reasons saved Grace as a child.

Grace now seventeen finds "her wolf" as human at her doorstep after a bullet hurts him.

After recognizing him because of his peculiar eye color, she takes him to the hospital to get help.

In the end, they are able to find a cure to keep him human during the winter.

The book was easy to read, at times felt too much like Twilight. A girl who acts shy because she wants to, who is always thinking about a wolf. Once she meets him as human, she is in love with him. He stays night after night in her bed due to a lack of parental supervision.

Tempt Me by Shiloh Walker

This is a short book.

Roxanne "Rocki" is the owner of a lingerie shop called Lush and Lace. She sells corsets for different type of female bodies. She is actually the one who designs them.

She meets Cole Stanton when he comes to her store with his fiancee, Mara. They will be the competition since Mara is opening her own lingerie store and wants to hire the designer of the beautiful corsets.

Rocki refuses to reveal the name since she had an instant dislike for Mara why is arrogant and rude. She does notice Cole and wonders why such an attractive man is about to married such an angry person.

Cole feels instant attraction to Rocki and he realizes his fiancee has changed into a mean spirited woman.

They attend Rocki's fundraiser in memory of her late husband who was a cop who died in the line of duty five years ago. The engagement is broken and Cole pays for a date with Rocki.

In the middle of all this, we learned that Rocki had a stalker before her marriage and he is back in her life and is threatening her.

This was an easy read. I enjoyed it. I do wish it was longer.

The Strip (The Big Bad Wolf #2) by Heather Killough-Walden

This is the second book in the Big Bad Wolf series.
This time our protagonist is Claire St James, she goes by Charlie to her friends. She is part of a band and has been hired to play exclusively in a Casino in Las Vegas by the powerful Gabriel Phelan.

Our two alphas fighting for Claire, who is a dormant female born werewolf are Malcolm Cole (the "bad guy" from book 1) and Gabriel Phelan.

Claire has been dreaming of both alphas for years. She tends to attract violent men. She does have a good friend with "benefits" Jesse her attorney who later becomes her guardian. While traveling to another murder, Malcolm is able to catch her scent and is able to mark her using a fake tattoo parlor. However, as in book one she gets kidnapped by Phelan who has been her self defense trainer for years. She has known him under the name of David Reese. He is able to shapeshift.

Gabriel is a sadist who had enjoyed hurting her during many years under the excuse of self defense training sessions. Once he decides to mark her and realizes that Cole found her first, he enjoys torturing her.

I liked Malcolm in The Heat and I liked that he was able to find some peace and happiness. But, I found the torture scenes and the constant threat of rape repetitive and distasteful. And the love scenes unbelievable.

The Heat by Heather Killough-Walden

Lily St. Claire is returning home after 10 years away. She moved away trying to forget about Daniel Kane, her best friend's brother.

She has been dreaming about Daniel's sapphire blue eyes for years and now she has started dreaming about another man with green eyes, Malcolm Cole.

Daniel realizes she is his mate as soon as he catches her scent. Recently named the Chief of Police of Baton Rouge he is investigating a serial killer who has Lily in his sites.

But, Daniel has competition. Malcolm Cole, the well known writer who is an alpha werewolf wants Lily as his mate since she is a Dormant, a woman who can bear werewolf children.

Malcolm has been cursed by a Roma gypsy during WW2 when he was serving as a British Spy in Germany.

Hunters have been around for years eliminating Werewolves and they seem to be targeting Daniel's friends and family.

My problem with this book starts with the many kidnappings Lily faces, the way the men behave around her. It is one thing to be a dominant alpha werewolf, another to be an abuser. The romance is not believable. Daniel seems extremely immature and I was rooting for Malcolm most of the time since he was mistakenly cursed. Then, he disappears from the book all together.

Grave Witch by Kalayna Price

Grave Witch
Alex Craft #1
Kalayna Price

Death has never been so good!

This is the third book I read by Kalayna Price and she didn't disappoint me.

Alexis is a Grave witch who uses her skills as a PI for her company Tongues For The Dead. She can raise a shade, communicate with them and has the "grave sight". Also, she is able to talk to a ghost and See the Fae.

She has a bad relationship with her dad and sister(Casey). However, her sister asked for help when a politician dies and Alex agrees to help find the killer and clear Mr. Caine.

Someone is killing young females in what looks like a Ritual. While raising a shade Alex gets injured and now her time is running out.

New in town is Detective Falin Andrews. Their first meeting is not a positive one. At the end, they end up working together to find the killers.

Death is a soul collector who has a crush on Alex. She has known him since she was a child. He interferes when there is an attempt on her life. We meet two other soul collectors in this book.

The book has everything from a new city (Nekros) to romance, action, and a dog named PC (Prince Charming). She has 2 girlfriends and a Fae Landlord as well as a Gargoyle.

I will be buying Grave Dance when it comes out. Maybe more questions will be answered, like where is her brother? Where does Death go? Or Falin's true job?

I like Falin but I want more Death.

Here is a taste:

"The kiss was gentle, his lips firm but giving, and warmth spread through me. I sighed against his mouth. The hand caught in my hair tightened, drawing me harder against him. His tongue dipped between my lips, bringing with it the honey taste of pixie brandy.
Pixie brandy?"

The Witch's Daughter by Paula Brackston

The Witch's Daughter
The Witch's Daughter #1
Paula Brackston

This book tells the story of Bess, sometimes called Elizabeth, Eliza, Elise. It starts in Batchcombe, Wessex in 1628 with Bess escaping the witch hunters.

The plague hits the small village where Elizabeth's family lives. Most of the town gets affected by it and her father, brother, and sister died from it. She gets ill as well but her mother who is a witch seeks help from a warlock by the name of Gideon Masters who brings her back to health.

Gideon wants Bess as his immortal partner.

Elizabeth's mother is hanged for witchcraft and she runs to Gideon for help. He teaches her how to use her powers and she becomes immortal but discovers that he is evil and escapes the town and Gideon. However, he follows her during different time periods.

We see her in London 1888 where she is a doctor, then as a nurse in Flanders 1917 and later in our time. In the present, she meets a teenager by the name of Tegan. Tegan wants to become a witch and starts learning the process.

During the centuries, Bess has escaped Gideon who can transform himself into anyone. In the present, he uses Tegan to get to Bess.

I thought the characters were predictable and Gideon is "pure evil". The end was abrupt and the resolution left me with questions. Bess never finds happiness.

Tangled Threads by Jennifer Estep- Elemental Assassin Book 4

I enjoyed the first few books in this series.

Gin is a semi-retired young assassin. However, she has never killed a child or a pet. She can use two Elements: Ice and Stone.

Her nickname is the Spider, raised to be a killer after most of her family was killed by a Fire Elemental.

What is not to like?

This installment finds her against a new threat – another assassin as herself has been hired to kill her. Someone who enjoys the kill. Her name is LaFleur and she is working for Gin’s family killer, Mab Monroe. Mab killed Gin’s sister and mom years ago.

The Spider has friends. She has a foster brother, Finn. Very attractive and rich. Also a good shoot and a ladies man. He may end up with Bria (Gin’s baby sister), Roslyn-a vampire who owns a club, Xavier who besides a cop and a bouncer is also in love with Roslyn. The Deveraux sisters Jo-Jo and Sophia (One uses her element to heal the other uses her element to dispose of bodies.

Most importantly it seems that she has found love with Owen who shares her hate for Mab since she is responsible for his family’s demise as well.

Tangled threads shows Gin’s doubts about her new relationship with Owen. Someone who understands her without criticism. I enjoyed every scene where they are together.

Not everything is roses. There is action, many men died by Gin’s hands. All bad men who deserve to die.

The Spider is a tough cookie but she is realizing she has friends who are willing to help her and maybe even a sister who can be there for her when the time comes to go for the big fish.
